Plus - understanding the GameStop phenomenon...
Hi,
Sorry I missed my normal Thursday delivery. I came back to Brooklyn from the farm midday, since that was the only window I could find before an important 2pm call. But, as so often happens, my 2pm had to reschedule at the last minute and the mad dash was nearly all for naught.
But, rather than skip a week, I’ll skip a day and get this out to you on a Friday.
We’re back from Brazil now. Going through the COVID-protocol of test-quarantine-receive-alarming-1984esque-phone-calls-about-fines-and-punishment-if-you-don’t-comply-test. We should have our negative test results within the next couple of hours.
In case any of you have been getting tested recently and haven’t found it too uncomfortable, well let the rest of us tell you that you should consider yourself lucky. Because in Brazil, they are still using the “shove the q-tip into your brain” approach of testing and, as you might guess, it’s not pleasant.
Anyway, we’re back and can’t wait to do it all over again next month when I visit my father for the first time in a year and a half.

- 25% moved because of COVID
- 24% Haven’t moved, but want to
- 5% Have plans to move
- 9% Moved, but not because of COVID

Not taking enough breaks
Not seeing co-workers face-to-face
Failure to get work done properly.
Lack of management oversight.
Working too many hours
*As always, your answer is 100% anonymous, even to me.

Below are weekly reads, watches, and/or listens:
- READ AND ATTEND (DIVERSITY & INCLUSION): This article from a few years ago via the NY Times is worth a refresher for folks still struggling to better engage diverse candidates. Related, is this article out of Duke University with discouraging stats around URM students entering careers in technology. Finally, if you missed this last week, you may fancy this event, headlined by Netflix, on the impact of Big Data on building a diverse workplace.
- WATCH THIS (REMOTE WORK): In the poll above, the common theme to all of the possible answers is “having boundaries”. When it comes to happy, fulfilled employees, setting boundaries without the fear of consequences is critical. But it’s the company’s responsibility to invest resources in making the work environment tenable through boundaries. Here’s a more articulate way of putting it in this 90 second video of Brené Brown on…you guessed it…the Kelly Clarkson Show. Oh, and can you guess Brené’s favorite sports team?
- READ THIS (EMPLOYER BRANDING): This year you will see lots of chatter around the fusion of customer brand and employer brand: messaging that attracts customers also attracts employees. if you ever wanted that marketing budget to find Its way into your HR pocket, then this may be your ticket. Here’s a poorly formatted article on unifying your brand.
- ALWAYS UNRELATED (ENTERTAINMENT):. If you’d like one of the best (short) blog posts that explains the GameStop phenomenon and it’s significance on “way we’ve done things”, then read this.
Bye for now,
Tarek
