Plus, a 4 year old's beautiful song & music video

Hi again,

For over 150 consecutive weeks (with minor exceptions), I’ve been sliding into your inbox with this email. There are now over 2,300 of you reading and each new person strengthens my commitment to keep at it. Thank you! And a special “thanks” to those of you who go out of your way to recommend this email to others.

In work-world news, did you catch wind that Brandless is shutting down? Despite shutting off nearly all of my news apps, I could not avoid the positive PR about Brandless hitting my inbox weekly for the past 2 years. I mean, just two months ago I shared this video of Brandless founder, Tina Sharkey, on defining a mission. Then, like that, it’s gone.

After the recent WeWork events, maybe 2020 is the year we all stop believing the hype. On a related note, read on…

ATTEND THIS (HIRE FOLKS): Next Thursday, we will be hosting 40-50 candidates recently affected by mass layoffs, mainly from College Humor (IAC), Cargo and WeWork (with a mix of others as well).

These folks are vetted, experienced and, as the world turns, had their job eliminated. Factoring in candidates with multiple skills, the breakdown is as follows:

  • 20% Engineering
  • 15% Product Mgmt
  • 12% Data
  • 35% Project Mgmt
  • 25% CX
  • 35% Marketing
  • 15% Design
  • 18% Biz Dev

Event page is here (password: makeworkhuman)We have a couple of spots available for companies to join us. If interested, please email me as soon as possible.

1.) Head of People: Folks, last week I got all excited to share a Head of People role that came on the market at a company that rhymes with “happy” (for good reason). Watch the video and email me if you’d like to be considered.

2.) A. Global Manager of People Experience & Inclusion | B. Manager of Recruitment: Today, I’m featuring a couple of very exciting roles (we’ll help you cut the line when applying – just email us): Global Manager of People Experience & Inclusion and a Manager of Recruitment at one of my favorite companies, ZX Ventures.

You’ve heard me talk about them ad nauseam, because they are one of the few companies that genuinely tries new things ALL THE TIME (I’m talking about the HR team). They are, after-all, the innovation arm of ABInBev, with offices all over the world (hence the need for Global managers). I made a quick video about why I love ZX Ventures here, but be sure to check out other videos here.

If you think you’re a great fit for either role, email me. We’ll be personally delivering folks.

WATCH THIS (RELATED):  For visual inspiration on the above topic, watch a few short videos of engineers telling fun engineering stories (you don’t have to be an engineer to enjoy these).

READ THIS (A QUIZ): Should you move for work? Take this fun quiz. It gave me an “Okayish” result for a move to Portugal.

CONSIDER THIS (ALWAYS UNRELATED):  A father recorded his 4-year old daughter singing a song that she wrote about dinosaurs falling in love…and dying. He then made a music video for it. I, quite simply, cannot get enough, and neither can you.

In personal news, I’m looking to buy a car. I’m thinking used, since I’ll be keeping it in the city and driving it just a few times per month. I like the Outback and the Mazda CX 5. But up for suggestions. If any of you have advice in this “crossover” section, please share!

Bye for now,
