**Note: Last week I included an invite to next week’s HR Breakfast. It incorrectly displayed 7:00am as the start time. Note, it starts at 9:00am. Apologies.**

When it comes to building a strong team, understanding what motivates them is critical. The challenge is that people are motivated by different things and many of us rely on personality tests try to help us make sense of it all.

Are we introverted or extroverted? ENTP or ISTJ?

Don’t miss this: What if I were to tell you that there’s a far more specific behavioral science that won’t try and categorize you, but, instead, understands your needs, wants, desires and fears at a shockingly intimate level? A science that knows exactly why you can’t stay at a company for longer than a year, why your manager constantly finds fault in your work, or why your colleague shies away from conflict.

Michael Parish Dudell, a friend, best selling author, and renowned keynote speaker whose courtesy I’ve abused more than once has agreed to present his new study at this year’s HR Uncubed.

This will be the first time Michael presents this to a mass audience and trust me, this will forever change the way you see personal & professional relationships. It will likely change the way you see yourself. In short, it will level up your people interaction powers.

Big, big news (related): Folks, the one and only Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking will be joining us at HR Uncubed this year to quite literally answer your questions. Quiet reached #1 on the NPR Best Seller list, #4 on the NYT Best Seller list, and the #12 best selling book across all categories on Amazon. The book has inspired changes around the world within universities, businesses and more. (We’ll have books for attendees.)

HR Uncubed: Price jumps next week for the conference. Please don’t wait to join us. Spots are limited and if it turns out you can’t make it, we won’t keep your money.

Very Related: Bullying: We’re familiar with the dangers of bullying and who makes a likely victim. But what if I told you that bullying may actually stem by one’s desperation to belong? Read more from this 2014 study and let’s chat about it over breakfast next Thursday.

Related: When companies are desperate to belong:  A few months ago, my wife, a packaging designer by profession, was showing me the Weight Watchers (now WW) redesign. My reaction was that it was unimaginative, boring and wouldn’t connect with their loyal customer base or the millennials they’re now trying to reach. But that’s not the worst part. The worst part (for me at least) is we have to suffer brands selling us on the “meaning” of the design:

  • “The logotype appears in a gradient that visibly lightens from left to right, embodying the idea of transformation and losing weight”.

It also embodies losing marketshare, with trending news on LinkedIn discussing WW’s 10% drop in membership in a single quarter. Overconfidence on the part of both organizations dealt a dangerous blow to an iconic brand.

Does your culture suffer from overconfidence? Maybe this article sharing tips to avoid overconfidence bias in the workplace or this article on common digital transformation mistakes to avoid.

Event Next Week (Related): Do you want to discuss what keeps employees happy, motivated and fun to be around? Join me, my pal Kristy McCann and dozens of your colleagues over coffee and breakfast sandwiches next Thursday in a beautiful (and very conveniently located) location.

I’ll leave you with this bit of humor.

Peace out,

I’d love it if you’d share this newsletter as a suggestion to your HR & TA pals on LinkedIn. Anyone can subscribe here.
