The success metric we ignore + Funny animal videos + Regaining community + Civil Rights + Education fails

Anyone need a new office?

So, we are officially going fully distributed starting May 1st. We’ve had two work-from-anywhere days per week for years and we’ve created enough of a process around it that we expect the change to transition nicely (and avoid the problems in remote working (article)).

Need an office? That means our office is available. If you’re a team of 20 or less, this may be the space for you. Prior to us, WeWork’s new acquisition, Managed by Q, enjoyed this footprint and Barkbox before them. Solid track records, if you ask me!

Oh yeah, it’s in Chinatown. And a real-life human being operates the elevator.

No pets allowed, unfortunately, but don’t let that stop you from watching this amazing dog video or this amazing owl video (sound not necessarily required).

Get Involved: Last week I referred to one of the folks that inspires me, Shaun King. Shaun just launched a new media company, The North Star, and already his daily podcast is #1 in the world for news & politics.

Shaun King a pioneer in the modern Civil Rights movement and is a great person to follow if you’d like to learn how you can exercise your civic muscle and make change happen.

And Mr. King will be speaking at HR Uncubed in June.

Why? Because attendees hold the keys to growing the world’s most influential companies. Today’s corporations inherently mimic the societal struggles they operate within. Shaun is going to take the stage and help HR & Talent leaders understand the role, influence and power they have in building a better society by building better businesses.

Exercise your civic muscle: This week in The Breakdown podcast, Shaun discussed the key to justice reform lies at the local District Attorney level. This graphmay help make sense of it. If you fancy getting involved, start here: https://meetyourda.org/

Changing Perceptions: While I’m on my “challenge institutions” kick, I encourage the parents out there to take a look at this spoken word take on today’s educations system. Not saying he’s right or wrong…or am I?

Finally, in career / existential crisis / must read news: “Did I devote enough time to my family? Did I learn enough new things? Did I develop new friendships and deepen old ones?” – Bill Gates

Take the time to read this article on the only metric of success that really matters is the one we ignore.

Sorry for the heavy email this week. I’ll blame it on the stomach bug I had on Tuesday. Next week I’ll look to dig up more tactical articles for you to enjoy.

I’d love it if you’d share this newsletter as a suggestion to your HR & TA pals on LinkedIn. Anyone can subscribe here.
