The Top Spots to Meet Up and Drink Up at SXSWi 2012

SXSWi Heat Map

250+ = parties on the books around town this weekend
1000+ = official panels, parties + events going on at the Austin Convention Center and the Downtown Hilton
0 = hours of projected sleep for SXSW attendees

With some 250 “unofficial” parties on the books, and over 1,000 “official” panels, parties and events going on in downtown Austin this weekend we thought it would be fun to map out the hottest spots in town.
As always, the hub of it all is the Austin Convention Center and it’s sidekick, the formidable Downtown Hilton. This is where you can find a panel on anything your heart desires. Does your heart desire pickup artists going toe-to-toe with feminist bloggers? Yes? Check out the Sex Nets: Pickup Artists vs. Feminists Panel Saturday 6:30-7:30pm. Or perhaps you’d rather a panel on business in Brazil. Ok then. Check out the How We Do It in Brazil Panel on Sunday at 12:30 pm. Or maybe you’re just here for some celebrity action. Will Anthony Bourdain do it for you? Check him out at his Digital Debauchery with Anthony Bourdain panel on Monday at 3:30-4:30pm.

Not so much for the panels? Well, you’re in luck. Check out our map to see where there’s most likely to be an event at all times, hint: the bigger the crowd or individual heat dot, the more parties + events are happening at that location during the festival.

First up, the MVP of serendipity from 2011, the GroupMe Grilled Cheese stand is back and doling out free grilled cheese and beer all day long. It’s a must do for badge and non–badge holders alike. (Trinity and 3rd, across from the convention center).

Corners are hot this year, in particular, 5th and Neches, where SquareSpace is running back their pop up food stand with delicious (and free) local food from the likes of the Three Little Pigs, Salt & Time and Franklin Barbeque. You might also want to check out 2nd and Congress on Saturday for the Foodspotting Street Food Fest.

There’s the ever popular Cedar Street Courtyard (208 W 4th St) hosting events for Blip.tv, MKE, GroupMe and the Great British Breakfast.

Over on 5th Street though, Roial Austin (120 W 5th St) is the place to be, with the SapientNitro party, the 3rd annual GeekyBeach Party, and the Razorfish happy hour all taking place inside their eco-friendly walls.

6th street takes the crown for the most events hosted at SXSW 2012. Check out spots like Molotov, The Stage on Sixth, Old School Bar & Grill, the Thirsty Nickel, and Coyote Ugly for plenty of SXSW peeps.

On 7th, Beauty Bar (617 E 7th) is the biggest place to seen and be scene, and over on Nueces, The Rattle Inn (610 Nueces) is where it’s at.

Congress is playing host to the big Bing lot (400 Congress), but the Lanai (422 Congress) and The Austonian (200 Congress) are also hot spots.

On Trinity, stop by Maggie Mae’s (512 Trinity), and on Colorado, check out The Hangar Lounge (318 Colorado).

Now go forth.
