NY Edition

This Week’s Affairs from Wakefield

Events for October 29 – November 5

Listen people, it’s Frankenstorm’s Monster, not Frankenstorm – can we get this straight once and for all? It’s probably safe to assume that all of Monday’s and some of Tuesday’s events will be called because of weather. However, the end of the week should more than make up for it with Wakefield’s own Uncubed. This thing is going to be fun, and no storm of the century is going to change that.

October 29: Apocalypse Now

Be careful out there, friends. It’s probably best to lash yourself to a supporting wall as the storm approaches – don’t loosen the ropes until the all clear is sounded. For a guide to potential flooding and evacuation zones, WNYC has a useful map. You can track the storm here and watch some terrifying satellite imagery here. And Miguel Bloombito’s Spanglish-language Twitter feed is a must for emergency updates.

October 31: The {c}0dEd Costume Carousal, 7pm

This Halloween celebration of the New York startup scene promises food, booze and “drunken pitches of new, undeveloped app ideas.” Hell, even if the idea of another costume party makes you queasy, this party should be a great chance to check out the swanky offices of Alley NYC, New York’s latest entry into the coworking space. Score your tickets here.

Location: Alley NYC, 500 7th Avenue, 17th floor

Sponsored Tip: Microsoft SkyDrive

Email attachments are bad news. Ever send out a resume with your name misspelled? Or need to make a quick change, but then have to resend the whole file? Yeesh. If you put your documents on Microsoft SkyDrive, you don’t need attachments. Just send a link to your doc and you’ll still be able to update it ‘til the cows come home, without even sending a new link. SkyDrive gives you 7GB of cloud storage and lets you format and edit Office documents online. For free. That’s good news. Get your account here.

November 1: Uncubed NYC

The best startup recruiting event in the country returns to the city where it all started. With reps from Spotify, Microsoft, tumblr, Facebook, Stack Overflow, Meetup, MediaMath, Simulmedia, Lot18 and a whole lot more on hand, you’d think it couldn’t get any better. You’d be wrong. We’ve got a Paper Napkin Pitch Contest, an art battle, and oh yeah… a bar. Get your tickets here, now.

The Altman Building, 135 West 18th Street

November 2: Uncubed NYC

What’s that, you say? Uncubed has a second day of events, speakers, DJ’s, and fun? Impossible! Oh, it’s not just possible, it’s on. In partnership with One ClipboardNYC Uncubed: Scout and Scale  will feature more founders than you could shake a stick at, some incredible panels, DJ sets from members of LCD Soundsystem and Yeasayer, and sidetours from, well, Sidetour. This you don’t want to miss. Score tickets here, now.

Location: The Altman Building, 135 West 18th Street

Alright, now, go back to that last minute storm prep. (Note that the line at the wine store was longer than that at the grocery store today – draw your own conclusions.)

Now go forth (and respondez vous s’il vous plait).
