Want to make a difference in the new year? Try America Needs You
There is a wealth of incredible programs that help disadvantaged students get to college. But once those high achievers reach higher education, they’re typically left to fend for themselves.
That’s where America Needs You steps in. The program, launched in New York in 2010, though now operating in New Jersey and Chicago as well, provides low-income, first-generation college students with intensive one-on-one mentoring and professional development programs over the course of two years.
Each young professional volunteer is paired with one student, meeting bi-weekly and monthly to help them navigate the challenges of both surviving school and joining the work force.
“Our volunteers also help students get internships and start exploring new careers,” Chief Operating Officer Marianna Tu told us, “getting access to professional experiences like job shadowing that a lot of people do through parents or informal social networks. We’re building that for students who don’t have that chance.”
ANY is actively seeking mentors for their upcoming program, especially from the tech industry. You can get started with volunteering now, or you can join them for Mentor Coach Recruitment Happy Hour on Monday, January 11 to get more information.
Additionally ANY is hiring a Volunteer Manager and an Internship Coordinator, as well as looking for a host of interns – learn more here.
Now go forth (and do good in 2016).
