Where Were You This Fine Day, One Year Ago?
Timestamp your life and get the payoff next year.
A year ago today – what were you up to? If you were us, you were celebrating (with a warm beverage, given that it was still freezing) the Spring equinox, the official tipping point from Winter to Spring. How can we be so sure what we were doing on March 20, 2011?
The answer comes from NYC startup Timehop.
Built at the first-ever Foursquare Hackathon in February 2011, Timehop originally started as 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo and simply emailed users their Foursquare checkins from exactly one year prior. The service gained such a following that the two founders quit the startup they were working on and focused on resurfacing the past, one day at a time.
Timehop now pulls from Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds and pings users each morning with a nostalgic reminder of what they were doing one year ago that day. In the case that there isn’t any documentation from the previous year, you don’t get an email that day.
We have to say that we get a kick out of seeing what our past “me” was up to one year ago, and it reminds us to document today so we can remember tomorrow.
Now go forth (and take notes) (and tweet) (and Instagram).
