Aura is hiring a lead infrastructure engineer

You will join our small platform engineering team to improve and scale our api infrastructure, serving hundreds of thousands of happy customers every day. Our infrastructure supports the apis for our iOS, android, web and embedded software that comprise our product to delight our customers.

We have a large network of picture frames across the world delivering cherished family photos - the right photo at the right time. We apply state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning technology to thousands of photos every day to automatically sort and curate our users' libraries. We have experienced 300% year-over-year growth, and the scale of our network will continue to grow in the future. There is a seemingly endless supply of challenging new problems and new questions.

As the leader for our infrastructure efforts, you will need to have deep experience with:

  • SQL database performance optimization
  • Using metrics to drive tasks and gauge their impact

Ideally you will also have the following experience:

  • Worked on a small team at a growing startup
  • Worked as part of a infrastructure/backend performance team in a fast-paced environment

You will report to the director of platform and be responsible for:

  • Classifying and prioritizing tasks based on ROI
  • Cost analysis, modeling and projection
  • Supporting new api features in concert with product teams
  • Identifying and executing ongoing reliability tasks (e.g. load testing, autoscaling)
  • Identifying and executing forward-looking service/framework improvements

AWS is our cloud provider, and we primarily use:

  • Cloudwatch
  • Cloudformation
  • Codebuild
  • ElastiCache (memcached)
  • EC2
  • Lambda
  • RDS (PostgreSQL)
  • SQS
  • S3

We use different languages for our backend domains:

  • Ruby on Rails for API servers
  • Go for load testing
  • Python/BASH for DevOps

You do not have to be an expert in any of these specific languages or AWS services, but we do require hands-on expertise in related technologies and a desire/tolerance for working with these languages and services.

This position is available in New York (Chinatown). We're primarily working remotely as of early 2021 but anticipate a return to offices this year. We also have a fully staffed office in San Francisco (Mission). You will also have the opportunity to travel to San Francisco occasionally for team meetings and offsites.
