The Director of Cafe is responsible for the overall success of our retail locations across Japan. Responsibilities include hiring, training, and developing all Area Leaders for our cafes, ensuring all of our teams are able to provide exceptional guest experiences, are building a pipeline of future leaders, and leading all of our new and existing locations to be successful against our financial and operational goals. 

You will:

  • Build passionate, empowered, high-performing Cafe teams, coaching and inspiring them to success while developing them into their future roles. Develop a group of Area Leaders to do the same 
  • Attract and build an effective and diverse Area Leader team, with styles, perspectives, and experience that keep Blue Bottle moving forward and ensuring its success 
  • Provide coaching, direction, and leadership support to team members at all levels and across teams in order to achieve ever-improving team, guest, and business results 
  • Partner closely with our People team, in particular with regards to recruiting, training, development, and engagement, ensuring our cafe teams are set up for success and growing at each step in their journey 
  • Ensure execution and successful implementation across product rollouts, initiatives, company changes, etc 
  • Determine and execute the deployment of our people resources to ensure team, guest, and business success

  • Guest
  • Actively seek out guest feedback and expectations, defining and leading Cafe strategies to meet and exceed these expectations 
  • Define, create and execute guest experiences through your Cafe teams that are consistent and aligned with our standards, ensuring consistently returning guests, as well as the reaching of new ones 
  • Ensure every cafe is an exemplar of hospitality toward our guests while teaching your team to find new and creative ways to connect more deeply with the communities around our cafes

  • Define and articulate a compelling, inspiring, and relatable Cafe vision for your teams, creating milestones to ensure execution 
  • Lead and grow a portfolio of successful cafes, developing strategies that are implementable and executable across each 
  • Drive consistency and continuous improvement of our Cafe channel, ever-improving the guest and employee experience and improving our bottom-line performance 
  • Drive exceptional financial performance for each cafe, through strong operational management and coaching of Area Leaders 

You are:

  • Exceptional at building relationships and trust, connecting with everyone from our Baristas in the field to our support teams to our leadership team

  • Deeply passionate about the experience (both external guests and internal employees) and find ways to continually elevate what we do through coaching of your team while ensuring accountability 
  • Deeply interested in our cafes’ operations and the teams within, continuously searching for ways to improve the experience of both 
  • Able to balance both the big picture and the nitty-gritty in shaping and leading the strategy for Cafes while also driving excellent day-to-day operations at the smallest level of detail 
  • Both detail-oriented and strategic, ‘sweating the small stuff' but also seeing the big picture and planning for the future 
  • Able to thrive in a high-paced, fast-changing, ambiguous, changing work environment 
  • A supportive leader who empowers and teaches team members and loves to get your hands dirty

  • An excellent written and verbal communicator, able to effectively distill a lot of information and detail into the why, how, what that inspires teams to make change happen successfully

You have:

  • Minimum 10+ years of retail leadership or equivalent experience, leading multiple regions and locations across operations, change, turnarounds, and people development. Must involve a large front-line team with direct ownership of multiple P&Ls 
  • 10+ years managing the financial success of multiple retail locations (ideally more than 30) 
  • 10+ years in retail management, with specific experience managing other retail leaders across multiple regions and locations (ideally more than 10) 
  • Demonstrated success in retail expansion across regions and into new ones 
  • Ideally prior experience in coffee or food & beverage 
  • Deep love and respect of delicious coffee, food, and amazing guest experiences 
  • Strong verbal and written communication in Japanese and English, proven across multiple layers of leaders
