Join bluebird bio’s enthusiastic and collaborative team by contributing to the overall success of our novel gene therapy approaches.  The focus of this position is to provide scientific leadership for cellular analytics at bluebird bio to support characterization of multiple cell-based gene therapy products in early to late stage development.  Activities include functional characterization and transduction efficiency assessment of subsets of CD34+ cells, identification of promising analytic technologies and assay development, and biomarker discovery.  The candidate should be well versed in HSC biology and application of state-of-the-art technologies for cellular analysis.  We are looking for a motivated scientist with the breadth of experience and drive to implement our vision for this function.

About the position:

  • Efficiently design and execute experiments to evaluate the engraftment potential of different CD34+ subpopulations in vivo
  • Develop assays to investigate transduction efficiency differences among CD34+ subpopulations
  • Lead projects involving multiparameter flow cytometry, FACS sorting, and gene expression analysis
  • Exercise independent judgment in development of new methods, techniques and evaluation criteria
  • Responsible for conducting, managing and troubleshooting the research activities of associate scientists working in the lab
  • Point person for reviewing and summarizing data via technical reports and presenting scientific data to leadership
  • Must be willing to have a flexible schedule based on experimental and company needs (including possible weekend work and travel)

About you:

  • PhD in biological sciences or related field
  • 2+ years post-doctoral experience in HSC biology, HSC transplant, and/or gene therapy applications
  • Demonstrated ability to train, mentor and manage junior staff
  • Hands-on expertise in ex vivo human hematopoietic stem cell culture and transduction preferred
  • Experience with mouse models of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Expertise in flow cytometry, FACS sorting, and qPCR desired
  • Experience with characterization of autologous, cell-based gene therapies a plus
  • Independently motivated, detail oriented, and creative problem solver
  • Highly collaborative with demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally to achieved goals
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills; ability to influence across multiple functions
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to embrace change and multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment
  • This is a hands-on position requiring the execution of laboratory experiments
