Actuarial Consultant I - Valuation

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Actuarial Consultant-Valuation will interface with actuarial and finance in establishing financial assumptions and perform and direct year end opinion work.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in tandem with the Chief Actuary and Chief Accounting Officer but have lead responsibility for monthly claim liability establishment, Active Life reserves, large claims and pending reserves and other liabilities as they occur
  • Support development of forecasting models, projections and relevant information to inform C-Level business decisions
  • Work with external auditor on issues related to the external opinion
  • Perform the year end actuarial opinion for each state/LOB, including development of the memorandums
  • Work with state auditors and finance to satisfy audit details
  • Perform quarterly state opinions as required by departments of insurance
  • Help to develop need for PDR and RBC on a state level basis
  • Perform ad-hoc data analysis as requested by Bright Health leadership

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position will have supervisory responsibilities as the team grows

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Math, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science, or a related field is required
  • ASA mandatory, FSA preferred
  • Four (4) or more years of experience working in a Valuation Actuary capacity or in a support role
  • Understanding of healthcare claims data, financials, annual statements and related

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Office products
  • Experience with forecasting and modeling
  • Intermediate level knowledge of healthcare pricing for ACA Individual and small group products and Medicare Advantage products as it pertains to valuation work
  • Understanding of company practices related to management of member populations for purposes of estimating risk
  • Produce, understand, and interpret internal and external analysis and reports; provide effective technical and non-technical support to internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills and ability to meet with C-Level leadership on pricing and plan related topics

LICENSURES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Associateship or greater in the Society of Actuaries or commensurate year of experience
