BuzzFeed News is hiring a new editor-in-chief to lead our newsroom of about 150 people in bureaus across the world. The EIC will be a part of the executive team, collaborate with tech leadership, and set an editorial vision and business strategy for the news operation at a crucial moment for the industry.
We are looking for a fearless leader who is willing to make news and make trouble. But that boldness must also be balanced with strong judgment. As the EIC, you will make a lot of tough calls — tough journalism calls, but also tough business and management calls.
Our new editor-in-chief needs to command the room and inspire, whether at an all-hands or on cable news. They must have reporters’ backs. And they must lead the entire newsroom, which includes not only reporters and editors, but copy editors, designers, and experts in traffic metrics and social platforms. BuzzFeed News thrives because of its mix of voices, from people in their first job to seasoned journalists.
Of course, we are looking for journalism chops. Our fundamental job is to put a check on power — to demand government transparency, to tell the stories of vulnerable people, and to expose injustice and corruption and wrongdoing. You don't need to have had experience on every beat in the newsroom, but you need to have the authority to inspire reporters and editors on every desk.
Finally: This is not any newsroom. This is BuzzFeed. The editor-in-chief must understand and speak the language of the internet. And a sense of humor wouldn’t hurt, either.
Please submit a resume and cover letter.
