Since launch, PR and communications has been a key part of shaping Canva’s image and narrative. Having been featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch Mashable, NBC, Channel 10 and more, we generated a lot of our earlier traction from word of mouth.
In this brand new role, you will be responsible for developing and executing the global communications and media relations strategy to consumer and trade media audiences. It will be your mission to make Canva a household name across the globe.
Working alongside the founders, you will be responsible for building global PR and brand marketing strategies to generate buzz and awareness of Canva. This role develops and executes PR/Communications strategies for all corporate initiatives, product launches, tech introductions, brand building exercises, executive profiles, lifestyle/brand/trade stories, promotions and events.This role would also oversee Canva’s voice and content across our social media channels, and provide support to other team’s on brand marketing.

The role

  • Represent Canva’s brand, culture and present our story to media across a range of verticals, tailoring the narrative to suit different audiences
  • Leverage substantial existing media relationships and build new contacts in primary markets such as the US, Australia and UK
  • Develop a media relations and PR strategy to secure placement in print, broadcast and online media
  • Train internal spokespeople to represent Canva through interviews and public speaking
  • Hire and manage agencies and/or freelancers in Canva’s key international markets around the world (including Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, France, India, Mexico etc.)
  • Coordinate all inbound media enquiries, interview and speaking requests
  • Lead development of Canva’s social media strategy centering around user-generated content, and sharing user case studies
  • Build and maintain a consistent tone of voice and brand across our product and marketing communications
  • Work with our digital design and product teams to support with copywriting and email campaigns
  • Monitor media mentions and performance, and provide reporting to key stakeholders
  • Create press releases, fact sheets, blog articles, social media posts, award submissions etc.
  • Manage Canva’s internal and external event program, running brown-bags, tech talks, workshops and community initiatives

Skills and responsibilities

  • A demonstrated 5+ years experience in a PR role - either in-house or at an agency - across the full gamut from strategy and campaign development to pitching and placing stories
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - you get your point across in a clear, concise way that’s easy for anyone to understand. Your attention to detail is flawless
  • Calm under pressure and able to juggle a range of important, competing priorities. You’ll be able to manage your own day-to-day schedule, and know what to do when you’ve got an event on, teams waiting on your feedback, and a journalist on the line needing something ASAP
  • Strategic thinker, able to understand Canva’s higher-level objectives and execute strategies and campaigns to support them. You’ll need to be as comfortable talking and thinking about how we scale PR across 20 countries, as you are making snap tactical decisions and judgements
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of stakeholders - journalists, other team members, company leaders, investors, and Canva’s community
