Since launch in 2013, Canva has grown massively with over 10 million users. Throughout the past four years, we have reached big goals such as launching Canva for iOS and Android, being available in 40+ different locales, introducing Canva for Print in different countries, and many more.

As we continue to kickstart different projects, our engineering also continues to grow in order to drive and put into motion the projects we have in our roadmap. Canva’s next big venture is expanding its engineering team in Manila.

As Canva engineers, you will work with a carefully selected team of ex-Google, VMware, Thoughtworks, and Atlassian engineers. The engineering team takes pride in its focus on engineering fundamentals. The team strives to use the most appropriate tools for the task at hand, and to strike a measured balance between getting things done and long-term maintainability.

Working within Canva’s engineering team means there are no big egos, the team is tight, and welcomes self-driven engineers to come and join in on the adventure. Frequently, engineers host sessions where new ideas or software engineering practice is discussed – this ensures that everyone in the team is constantly learning.

Our Manila engineering team will be involved in projects for our core Marketplace offerings — key Canva elements such as Templates, Layouts, Categories, Folders, Images, etc. You will be working collaboratively with engineers in our Sydney headquarters, but have autonomy over your projects and deliverables.

Engineering is a core part of Canva – we strive hard to have the best of breed engineering culture. As we expand our engineering team in Manila, we are scouting for talented and awesome Java Backend Engineers out there to help us move the needle in empowering the world to design!

Resposibilities

  • Work closely with designers and product managers to deliver various products and projects.
  • Collaborate with the team and bring new ideas to the table
  • Engage in technical discussions and the design of  new features Identify and address performance bottlenecks
  • Participate in design and code reviews
  • Communicate with other team members to determine the best solutions to difficult problems
  • Passion for performance debugging and benchmarking

Requirements

  • Comfortable working with a wide range of tools
  • Strong Computer Science/Software Engineering background
  • A generalist, with current Java experience
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with a creative and analytic mind
  • Deep knowledge of the web stack, networks, and Unix administration
  • A strong bias towards action and getting things done

    • We would love it if you had experience in:
  • AWS infrastructure
  • Search infrastructure (Lucene/Solr, ElasticSearch)
  • Horizontal scaling, Heroku, MapReduceBoth SQL and NoSQL stores
  • Experience with working on a geographically distributed team, with strategies for keeping in sync with colleagues in HQ.
