About the Team 

This opportunity sits within our People Group, in our People Operations team. The People Group's mission is to create the most effective and engaged company in the world. Our People Operations team is responsible for providing advice and support to our employees from onboarding through to offboarding, working closely with a wide variety of teams such as IT, Finance, Legal and our senior leaders to deliver exceptional employee experiences.

Across the entire employee lifecycle, from onboarding all the way to offboarding, and everything in between, the People Operations team fuels Canva's hyper-growth by delivering seamless, scalable, and delightful people practices.

About the role

In this newly-created role as our subject matter expert (SME) for HR policies and compliance, you will lead our efforts in this space and coach our team on best practice. You will proactively evaluate our current state of play, future needs and scaleability, and operationalise your findings into actionable programs and initiatives which you will then lead end to end. You will play a key role in our global team and our growth, ensuring we minimise risk, meet our obligations and continue to deliver seamless employee experiences. You will communicate thoughtfully and impactfully with Canvanauts through our policies, training and internal communications to ensure our team understand, appreciate and connect with their purpose.

**Please note: this role can be based in our Sydney office, or can be performed remotely from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand**

As our policy and compliance SME, you will...

  • Own Canva's policy creation, management and compliance efforts, coaching and guiding our teams on best practice policy creation
  • Develop a framework for policy governance and maintenance
  • Manage Canva's compliance-related projects, such as WGEA reporting and internal/external audits, and lead the implementation of any recommendations
  • Partner with our Legal and L&D teams to create and implement compliance training for employees and leaders
  • Develop and operationalise a systematic approach to capturing feedback to inform how we iterate or improve our policies and/or compliance
  • Proactively identify inefficiencies and gaps, leading subsequent improvement initiatives and programs end to end
  • Partner with HR teammates around the world to drive global alignment in policies and localise compliance requirements to the laws and regulations of each region

What we're looking for

  • Significant experience in HR and/or People Operations
  • Focused experience in the areas of policy and compliance
  • Experience using an HRIS (Workday experience highly regarded)
  • Experience working across regions with a geographically dispersed HR team
  • Exposure to ER/IR
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style as needed (experience in internal communications will be highly regarded)
  • Experience working in a rapidly scaling business through global expansions and acquisitions (highly desirable)
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to balance the needs of the business and the employees while maintaining compliance
  • Comfortable working in highly ambiguous situations, with a proven ability to come up with scalable solutions for time-sensitive matters
  • Experience with IPO readiness or SOX compliance in the US (highly desirable)
