About the team

The Content Team’s mission is to make sure that the content in Canva is the best overall quality library of resources available. Its mission is to create gorgeous, high-quality, highly usable, on-trend, and relevant content to fulfill every user’s need and to become the go-to place for all things related to design, for both our in-house designers and our global users. 

About the role

You’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of production projects, the freedom to influence creative direction, and the chance to build and mentor an amazing team. You will be working closely with art directors and creative teams to innovate visual solutions for the Canva content library. The ability to distill creative ideas into a well-articulated direction and lead the execution throughout all phases of each season will be the key to success in this role. The creative lead will act as the gatekeeper of the creative and content objectives for your Team, and be seen as the guiding light for your Squads’ visual representation.

Creative Direction

  • Expansion of art direction 
  • Consistently improve the quality of output to align with the Content Vision
  • Extensive research in design/element usability, cultural trends, trend research (with photos as the format focus), diversity of design & illustration styles, directions, and trends
  • Run educational workshops internally & externally (upskilling team on in-depth research, incorporating research into briefs & works)
  • Spot trends before they happen and have the library stocked with content ready for users and our template designers
  • Work closely with the templates team to: Influence their use of graphics and expand their skills when using them, provide the best content, encourage them to push boundaries that are limiting the maximum potential of creativity, health check the value of production requests

Project/Team management

  • Improve team processes, documentation, and operations
  • Clearly outline critical paths & responsibilities to meet the team's goals
  • Support Art Directors on project deadlines and directions
  • Build growth plans for Art Directors and support them in their own mentoring tasks across Squads
  • Actively build up resources for the team, as well as, individual team members' skill sets
  • Encourage efficient and effective teamwork
  • Maintain great team morale by being a supportive leader/coach
  • Leading by doing: Work with the team and get your hands on the tools when needed


  • Work with product designers and product managers to ensure content is surfaced in Canva in the best way possible
  • Close the loop effectively and efficiently on projects with stakeholders
  • Confidently collaborate and partner up with stakeholders and other teams to achieve crazy big goals
  • Internally advertise groups' output (presentations at stand-ups, company meets, and season reporting)
  • Proactively troubleshoot with engineers and work with product managers for graphics concerns
  • Work with Talent Acquisition Partners to confidently reach out, interview, and discuss project needs with freelancers and partners

Creative and Constructive Feedback

  • Confidently provide constructive and real-time feedback to all types of learners, creatives, peers to set them up for success
  • Confidently handle difficult and crucial conversations as: performance management, career growth, and personal matters

Other qualifications needed

  • In-depth understanding of Design Principles across specializations
  • Good understanding of template design & creating content for designers 
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles
  • Creation/Execution Principles: Color, composition, complexity, objective, value)
  • Strong competence in design/illustration software (Adobe Illustrator)
  • Basic understanding of data/metrics
