About the Department

Cloudflare’s Engineering Team builds and runs the software that handles about 10% of HTTP requests on the Internet today. We also build and run the internal tools that builds and runs our software. The Engineering Team is split into two groups: one handles product development and the other handles operations. Product development covers both new features and functionality and scaling our existing software to meet the challenges of a massively growing customer base. The operations team handles one of the world’s largest networks with data centers in 102 cities worldwide.

Responsibilities

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Data Engineering Team in London. You will lead a team of passionate, talented engineers that are building the infrastructure that reliably processes 6 million logs per second, totalling almost 1 petabyte a day. In this role, you will introduce tools and processes to make our engineer’s lives better. You will play an active part in shaping product strategy based on what’s technically possible. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering standpoint.

You bring a passion for meeting business needs with building technically innovative solutions, and excel at shifting between the two—understanding how big-picture goals inform technical details, and vice-versa. You thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience delivering scalable distributed systems. Most importantly, you will have a track record of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.

Requirements

  • 2+ years experience in engineering management

  • Experience architecting and building large-scale distributed stream processing systems

  • Experience administering, operating, and optimizing relational/columnar/document databases and data warehouses

  • Experience building large scale ETL pipelines

  • Solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in algorithms, data structures, and software design

  • Comfortable using and administering Linux systems

  • Excel at planning, creating teams and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability

  • Demonstrate a track record of managing a team including hiring, on-boarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to reach higher. You’re as good as explaining “why” as you are “how”

  • Experience implementing tools, process, internal instrumentation, methodologies and resolving blockages

  • Comfortable managing teams/projects with tight deadlines and short release cycles

  • Experience building Golang-based applications
  • Experience building analytics APIs
  • Experience with containerized/virtualized applications
