A data refinery, built to understand our planet


With streamlined access to petabytes of science-ready geospatial data and the computing power to go with it, the Applied Science team at Descartes Labs is building a digital twin of the earth.  We model our planet by combining sensor data with a mix of physical, statistical, and machine learning modeling approaches.

We’re looking for geologic modeling experts to make sense of this data, provide value to our mining and oil & gas clients, and develop new approaches for working with large amounts of geospatial data.

Responsibilities

  • Use geospatial remote sensing data sets, including multi-spectral satellite data, seismic, gravity, and magnetics to model earth systems
  • Creatively combine geologic, ancillary data, and client data to answer tough science questions and solve client problems
  • Interact with clients to brainstorm methodologies and present results
  • Work with our engineering team to continuously improve our platform

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelors and advanced degrees (MS/PhD) in relevant fields (e.g. Geology, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics)
  • Strong statistical background
  • Experience with geospatial remote sensing data
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a scientific programming language - preferably Python (numpy, pandas)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

Pluses

  • Exploration for precious metals
  • Experience with metamorphic and alteration systems related to precious metals
  • Experience with multispectral satellite for mining (ASTER etc)
  • Field experience in creating published geologic maps
  • Peer-reviewed published journal articles on related topics
  • Experience with version control software (e.g. GitHub, Mercurial, Subversion, etc.)
  • Experience with cloud and/or distributed computing
