At Emerald, we are building the software and hardware infrastructure to accelerate the pace of life sciences research, with the intention of laying the foundations for a period of flourishing innovation in biotechnology and medicine in the coming decades. It is our aim to make it as achievable for a small team of scientists to pursue an ambitious therapeutic R&D initiative as it has become for a small team of programmers to develop and deploy a web-based software product.
The Emerald Cloud Laboratory (ECL) is a web-based life sciences lab, enabling scientists to move out of the lab, and to instead conduct research remotely from a computer. It empowers scientists to specify experiments with the precision and reproducibility of code, and to abstract away the physical execution of those experiments to Emerald’s robotically-driven facility in South San Francisco. Through the ECL, the resulting experimental data is accessible in perpetuity, detailed metadata is linked and explorable, and investigators are equipped with a suite of computational tools to drive of the algorithmic components of data analysis, freeing them to focus on the insights that are uniquely derived by scientists.
Emerald Scientific Computing
The charge of Emerald's Scientific Computing team is to build into the ECL the cutting-edge computational tools and techniques that can significantly augment the research process for any life scientist. First, these include the existing models and algorithms whose usage currently distinguishes a computational scientist from a laboratory scientist. In addition, these include underlying models, and the associated higher level analysis and simulation capabilities, which have yet to be developed. On the Sci Comp team, you will introduce a broad suite of analysis, modeling and simulation tools across the comprehensive list of in vitro experiments offered through the ECL, spanning fields as diverse as computational chemistry, bioinformatics, systems biology, and more.

You have over five years of experience in computational research or applied math (Masters degree in Computational Biology or similar required, PhD preferred).
You have deep knowledge of (undergraduate degree or stronger) chemistry, biology, or physics.
You have strong programming skills in a variety of languages.
You have scientific expertise in physical or statistical modeling of large scale systems.
You are an expert in computational chemistry, computational biology, or bioinformatics.
You have extensive experience in either Mathematica, Matlab, R or other high-level data driven languages.
