Senior Software Engineer, Data Analytics

Etsy, Brooklyn, NY

Peer-to-peer e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies

A Data Engineer at Etsy creates analytics tools and builds out our large scale data infrastructure.

The Data Engineering team is responsible for instrumenting Etsy’s website and mobile applications, writing offline streaming and batch jobs to process the incoming data stream, warehousing the results, and building end-user applications that make all of that data easy to digest.  This diverse array of responsibilities ensures that we always have another tool to build or another mystery to solve.

About the Team

The technical staff at Etsy believes that code is craft, good software and systems designs are works of art, and that the work we do is part of larger creative culture represented by the hundreds of thousands of inspired makers who make Etsy such a wondrous marketplace. We believe that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We also believe in the right tool for the job, not language-as-religion. Our current systems run PHP, Java, Scala, Python, Ruby, Solr/Lucene, Postgres, MySQL, and more. Check out our Engineering blog: http://codeascraft.etsy.com

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced full stack senior software engineer to help us tackle complex data-related problems using diverse datasets.  Our team creates data pipelines and internal applications (beyond simple dashboards) that make it easy for people to access and understand the data that helps them build great products -- including our A/B testing infrastructure.

About You

You’re an engineer who can turn ideas into extremely reliable code that other people – or you, six months into the future – will find easy to comprehend and modify. You believe in the connective power of Etsy’s peer-to-peer marketplace and helping creative entrepreneurs scale their business to achieve their dreams. Our team values people who are curious, enthusiastic, generous, and responsible.
You will be successful in this role if you:

  • Are a full stack web-developer, capable of doing both front-end and server-side development.

  • Have a background in data analysis or data visualization, particularly in the field of Web analytics.

  • Have an ability to use tools like SQL, R, Hadoop, and Spark for data analysis are a big plus

  • Have a background in statistics and statistical analysis, especially in the area of experimentation and A/B testing.

  • Understand that being an effective software engineer is as much about communicating with people as it is about writing code.

  • Enjoy taking a vague question and turning it into a thorough answer.
