What you'll work on: 

This is your opportunity to join the human factors practice at Fitbit! We are seeking a seasoned hardware UX researcher with a background in ergonomics to build on the human factors research initiatives that inform the teams responsible for all of our connected devices. As a key member of the UX Research team, you will work closely with our industrial design and mechanical engineering partners to design and conduct exploratory, descriptive and summative research.    

You will be asked to develop creative methodologies to answer questions on both existing and emerging technologies/form-factors, in addition to utilizing more traditional methods. As part of your role, you will work with team leads to define the process for incorporating human factors research into the hardware product development lifecycle.  This is an opportunity to not only impact the comfort, fit, and function of our devices, but to integrate human factors practices into the way in which we work.

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with industrial design, mechanical engineering and other teams as necessary to define processes for incorporating research into their processes
  • Translate product related questions into research objectives, against which you’ll design and conduct research
  • Prioritize research requests, aligning to corporate objectives and team needs
  • Conduct in-lab and field usability evaluation of products and prototypes
  • Conduct literature reviews and competitive analyses
  • Include designers, engineers and PMs in your research activities whenever possible
  • Produce deliverables that highlight product implications and necessary actions
  • Present to a wide range of stakeholders, including leadership teams, when required
  • Share developed guidelines or creative methodologies internally, to the UX team, or externally, to the broader research community

Requirements: 

Our ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of biomechanics, mechanical engineering considerations, and human factors/ergonomics guidelines. You have worked in an ergonomics-focused research role on products where ergonomic considerations were critical. You have demonstrated the ability to quickly generate product-relevant, actionable insights when timelines were short. Your career has focused on end-user-facing products in domains in which many guidelines were not yet known. You are experienced in leading studies to collect, model and analyze anthropometric data sets.  You understand how, when, and why to represent diversity in these datasets. You are highly collaborative, pragmatic, and motivated to build an industry-leading practice.

  • 2–5+ years’ hardware ergonomics research for wearables or on-body product experiences 
  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline: human factors, mechanical engineering, biomechanics, HCI, etc.
  • Portfolio that demonstrates experience in generative, descriptive and summative research – with examples of product/business impact
  • Experience working with designers, PMs and Engineers to design prototypes optimized for research
  • Experience with ethnographic research
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
