Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.
Ginkgo’s NGS Team plays a key role in our foundry’s success, offering a diverse portfolio of sequencing applications including highly automated DNA sequencing, RNA and microRNA sequencing, and de novo genome assembly. We utilize state-of-the-art NGS platforms with Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, and 10X Genomics instruments to support Ginkgo’s systems-level comparative and functional genomics approaches to organism engineering.
As the Head of NGS, you’ll be leading a team of highly skilled computational biologists, bioinformaticians, R&D engineers, and operations engineers. With your depth of expertise in people, program, and project management, you’re adept at mentoring and empowering technical teams, while also overseeing critical project specifications and deadlines. Plus, your extensive genomics experience makes you eager for this opportunity to scale Ginkgo’s NGS services, collaborate with innovative cross-functional teams, and help drive the overall strategic vision of our foundry.
Architect the strategic vision and road map of research and development internal to the NGS Team and across team interfaces
Manage a diverse team comprised of computational biologists, bioinformaticians, R&D engineers, and operations engineers
Oversee the development, scale-up, and refinement of high-throughput, automated sequencing workflows and services
Grow, maintain, and manage NGS services and coordinate special projects for internal collaborators
Coordinate multidisciplinary work across Foundry and Program teams, as well as Software and Automation
Provide technical expertise toward the design and execution of experiments to support program team objectives
Collaborate with external vendors to develop and onboard new genomics technologies and workflows to expand platform capabilities
Oversee growth of existing team to maximize efficiency and meet foundry needs
Contribute more broadly to the overall strategic vision of Ginkgo and the foundry
Execute on special projects, as needed
PhD in biology, molecular biology, genetics, or related field
5-10 years of experience in managing NGS teams
High-level experience with DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, and de novo genome assembly
Track record of introducing new approaches and refining existing ones to NGS sequencing services
Excellent people and product management skills
Prominent expertise in project management
Ability to mentor technical team members and empower them to excel
Exposure to (and appreciation of) laboratory automation processes
Ability to remain poised and flexible while engaging in a fast-paced environment
Strong capability of addressing emergent needs, while maintaining a focus on long-term strategic goals
Excellent communication skills
High-level ability to adapt to change and prioritize multiple responsibilities
Experience with working in a startup environment a plus
