Head of Metabolic Engineering

Ginkgo Bioworks, Boston, MA

Bayer CropScience and Ginkgo Bioworks are joining forces, forming a new company that will build technology to enable microbes to fix nitrogen in the roots of non-legume crops. The company will have a presence in both Boston, MA, and West Sacramento, CA, where it will leverage the existing organism engineering and plant biologics capabilities of its parent companies. Primary corporate operations will be carried out at Ginkgo Bioworks's headquarters in the Boston Seaport.
The new company is looking for a Head of Metabolic Engineering, based in Boston, to guide the team responsible for delivering organisms to spec to customers using Ginkgo's foundry.
Your most important job is to build and manage the team of crazy talented metabolic engineers who will repeatedly deliver engineered strains to spec, on time and on budget. You and your team will do whatever it takes to make this happen. Your team will leverage Ginkgo's foundry and Bayer’s strains to do more strain engineering than any other strain engineering team has done before. In the process, you will uncover new design rules for biology and develop new parts, chassis and strains that will be used and reused in the future. This is a pioneering role, with large potential for career growth.

  • Recruit and manage a team of talented organism and metabolic engineers
  • Ensure that program leads deliver organisms to spec on time
  • Actively use the foundry and train others to best employ it
  • Assign personnel across multiple strain development programs
  • Push program teams to develop and execute on top quality engineering strategies
  • Cross-fertilize best practices across strain development programs

  • PhD plus minimum of 5 years industry experience
  • Prior experience running a team of metabolic engineers
  • Deep understanding of microbial metabolism and physiology
  • Prior experience engineering both primary and secondary metabolism a plus
  • Familiarity with high throughput

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry and it needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. We hope to continue to build a company whose culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with engineers from all walks of life. Making biology easier to engineer is a tough nut to crack - we can’t afford to leave any talent untapped. It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
