Strain Engineer

Ginkgo Bioworks, Boston, MA

THE ORGANISM COMPANY

Bayer CropScience and Ginkgo Bioworks are joining forces, forming a new company that will build technology to enable microbes to fix nitrogen in the roots of non-legume crops. The company will have a presence in both Boston, MA, and West Sacramento, CA, where it will leverage the existing organism engineering and plant biologics capabilities of its parent companies. Primary corporate operations will be carried out at Ginkgo Bioworks' headquarters in the Boston Seaport.

We want to hire you because you believe that even though biology remains frustratingly unpredictable and our foundry only scratches the surface of what we need to engineer biology, you can deliver an engineered organism to spec on time - no excuses. You believe this because you have successfully engineered an organism start to finish and it *worked*.

We are looking for a strain engineer to execute the design, construction, testing and analysis of microbes for agriculture with a small team & our foundry. If this sounds like you, please apply.

Responsibilities

  • Genetic design of strains to optimize strain performance
  • Strain engineering to optimize strain performance
  • Developing suitable cultivation conditions and assays for screening the performance of your microbes
  • Testing the metabolic and physiological performance of your microbes

Requirements

  • B.A. or equivalent
  • 2-5 years industry experience in strain or metabolic engineering
  • Mad lab skills when it comes to molecular biology and microbiology
  • Prior experience with metabolic engineering of industrial yeasts or prokaryotes a plus
  • Prior experience in ag biologicals a plus

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry and it needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. We hope to continue to build a company whose culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with engineers from all walks of life. Making biology easier to engineer is a tough nut to crack - we can’t afford to leave any talent untapped. It is the policy of this company to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
