Senior Scientist - High-Throughput Biology

Ginkgo Bioworks, Boston, MA

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer.  Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more.  Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.  Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.

Our approaches are designed to scale the construction of new microorganisms 100-1000x over traditional bench-top engineering via the development of custom software and automation tools.  We are seeking biological engineers to improve and scale our existing technologies for our future Foundries. You are the ideal Senior Build Engineer if you love working with a mixed team of biologists, software developers, and process engineers.  We need your experience developing high-throughput biological processes to help us meet our mission of making biology easier to engineer.

  • Support the development and improvement of several high-throughput molecular biology pipelines including PCR, DNA assembly, next-generation sequencing, and strain transformation
  • Gather and interpret large datasets and make sound scientific recommendations for improvement
  • Generate and interpret control charts and other graphs as needed
  • Provide guidance to junior and senior researchers based upon your previous experience
  • Jump in and help with whatever is needed to get the job done: bench-top molecular biology, moving furniture, database cleanup, you never know!

  • Extensive familiarity with molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, or relevant field
  • Experience analyzing large datasets
  • Experience using automated liquid handlers
  • Ability to work well with a team in a fast paced-environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to summarize and act quickly and efficiently
  • Strong desire for further understanding
  • Enjoy customer service and explaining concepts to a variety of audiences

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry and it needs to change.  Our goal is to help drive that change.  We hope to continue to build a company whose culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with engineers from all walks of life.  Making biology easier to engineer is a tough nut to crack –  we can’t afford to leave any talent untapped.

It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
