Senior Scientist 3/ Principal Scientist, Analytical Chemistry

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. 
 
To realize our dream of building a next-generation organism company, we must ensure that quality is maintained during all stages of our projects, through to the successful deployment of our organisms and processes. Therefore, we’re looking for  a team member with strong analytical chemistry experience to develop, manage and interpret assay quality specifications for a wide range of procedures and analytes. As a Senior Scientist 3 or Principal Scientist, Analytical Chemistry, you will be a key contributor of the QAQC team that will help to design and deploy analytical capabilities for proteins and other large-molecule analytes. You’ll help ensure that Ginkgo, our customers, and our contract manufacturers have the necessary methods and processes in place so that we maintain compliance across any required regulatory standard and consistently meet the defined product and process specifications. Support of building policies and structures that allow for scalability and are aligned internally with Foundry operations will also be integral part of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate and transfer sample preparation and analytical quantification methods for chemical and biological analytes within upstream and downstream fermentation samples using analytical methods such as LC-UV, GC-FID, IC-PAD, CGE, LC-HRMS, and GC-MSMS
  • Support project specific QAQC to ensure that criteria, application and decision making are aligned with standards as defined by Ginkgo’s Quality team
  • Support incoming and outgoing analytical method transfers, including method alignment, method validation, standard operating procedure (SOP) generation and equivalence testing
  • Supporting lab scale through pilot scale activities within Ginkgo and interfacing with tech transfer to and from customers
  • Aligning organizational objectives with department strategy; support translation of strategic decisions into effective short- and long-term planning including staffing, development and scientific initiatives
  • Create, manage and analyze control charts which monitor accuracy and precision of analytical QAQC procedures over time to streamline quality assurance, secondary review of data and root cause analysis
  • Design, revise and deploy structured systems to streamline and encourage scalability of current QAQC processes (processes are described in below responsibilities)
  • Perform QAQC data collection, integration, analysis, and reporting with the use of Ginkgo’s proprietary laboratory information management system (LIMS), driving revision of the LIMS when necessary
  • Maintain analytical instrumentation and associated maintenance logs, troubleshooting instruments as needed

Desired Experience and Capabilities

  • BS in analytical chemistry or related field with at least 10 years of industrial experience; Or Ph.D. with at least 5 years of industrial experience
  • Experience in leadership within analytical method development and analytical tech transfer in the context of large-molecule applications
  • Strong expertise in operating and maintaining chromatographic analytical chromatography equipment, especially LC-UV, GC-FID, IC-PAD, CGE, LC-HRMS, and GC-MSMS - experience with CGE would be a plus
  • Strong hands-on knowledge and experience in purification and analyses of proteins and large molecules would be a plus
  • Experience creating, tracking and analyzing control charts for quality assurance and streamlined root cause analysis
  • Ability to design systems that streamline and scale analytical testing processes
  • Demonstrated mastery of authoring SOPs, validation reports, and certificates of analysis (COAs)
  • Expertise in Chromeleon, 32 Karat and/or Empower is highly desirable
  • Ability to work well within a fast-paced team environment and balance multiple projects simultaneously with excellent communication
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong hands-on knowledge and experience in purification and analyses of proteins would be a plus
