Application Engineer, Internal Tools

Are you a self starter who loves autonomy and helping others in the workplace? Passionate about crafting internal tools and helping our company scale? We have the role for you. It takes great tools to build a great culture and that is why GitHub is looking for an Internal Tools Application Engineer to join a team of compassionate people building and maintaining those internal tools.

From our internal communication tools to our custom internal social network, you’ll be responsible for the technology that keeps our internal tools teams working efficiently.


  • You will write, test, and review application code
  • You will influence and inform the technical direction of internal projects
  • You will detect and respond to changes in application health
  • You will collect and analyze internal tools metrics to drive improvements
  • You will document the systems you build
  • You will encourage and assist the technical growth of your peers
  • You will work with the internal tools teams to define and prioritize projects

Minimum Qualifications:

  • You have at least 3 years of experience as a software engineer
  • You have worked on an active web application
  • You have general database knowledge
  • You enjoy dynamic programming languages
  • You have a solid knowledge of testing principles
  • You are familiar with metrics-driven application monitoring
  • You have excellent communication skills, especially when working with a distributed team
  • You have strong empathy for your coworkers and internal tools
  • You should have a strong product sense

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Gathering requirements from internal users.
  • Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
  • JavaScript or CoffeeScript.
  • ElasticSearch.
  • AWS, Heroku and/or similar cloud computing operations.
  • Jekyll, Nanoc, or other static site generators.
