Handshake is helping to democratize opportunity
Handshake is the number one site for college students to find a job. We connect up-and-coming talent across all 50 states with nearly 500,000 employers recruiting on Handshake — from every Fortune 500 company to thousands of small businesses, nonprofits, startups, and more. Handshake is democratizing opportunity and ensuring college students have the support they need to find a great job and kick-off a meaningful career regardless of where they go to school, what they choose as a major, and who they know.
We welcome all people. We celebrate diversity of all kinds and are committed to creating an inclusive culture built on a foundation of respect for all individuals. We seek to hire, develop and retain talented people from all backgrounds. Individuals from non-traditional backgrounds, historically marginalized or underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Your Impact
Handshake is hiring a Senior Product Manager reporting to the VP of Product on the Employer team. You will lead our Employer Roles Squad, a new zero-to-one product area focused on the future of how teams work together on Handshake. You will be responsible for activating and engaging more types of users on our platform (beyond recruiters), which is one of our most important initiatives over the next three years.
While we’ve made impressive strides in becoming the market leader in college jobs, recruiting events, and employer outreach, we’re just getting started. You’ll build on this foundation, creating new features and reimagining existing ones to transform how more types of users leverage our platform to engage with students.
You’ll be part of a close-knit cross-functional team including not just R&D but also demand generation, marketing operations, product marketing, sales, customer success and insights - together building a truly game-changing SaaS platform. At the same time, you’ll be mindful about making positive societal impact, including improving diversity, equity and inclusion in entry level recruiting.
Your Role
As a senior product manager, you’ll plan and deliver a roadmap to:
-
Expand and innovate: our employer product offering to transform the recruiting process for line of business users (for example - connecting engineers directly with students interested in engineering)
-
Engage users: find opportunities to drive engagement and outcomes - tailored to these line of business-specific use cases
-
Drive marketplace value: continually strive to identify and optimize the key points of value creation across all three sides of the network
You’ll own the lifecycle end-to-end for your product area, including:
-
Product development process: Leading a high performing cross-functional squad, including engineering and design partners, from research and roadmap planning to delivery
-
Launch and adoption: Partner closely on go-to-market and implementation, working with marketing, sales and customer success. You never hesitate to roll up your sleeves and tackle something hands-on. It’s never someone else’s problem. You’ll run beta programs and pilots to maximize learning and minimize code investment, getting close to the customer and the details through the process.
-
Cross-Handshake partnership: Work with stakeholders across Handshake’s largest team (the broader Employer team) and on other sides of the Handshake marketplace (EDUs and Student) to innovate quickly but deliberately
-
Goals, metrics and tracking: Create a robust and clear thread of data from strategy through development through in-market iteration.
Your Experience
-
Strong foundation in roadmap development and releasing products for complex, multifaceted marketplace businesses or SaaS platforms.
-
4+ years partnering with engineering teams to ship code. Ideally in a many-stakeholder environment with dependencies and collaboration.
-
Strong systems and analytical thinker. Can connect the dots, spot challenges and edge cases, integrate multiple considerations.
-
Extensive experience presenting both internally and externally including working with customers, users, and internal cross-functional partners and executives.
-
Working knowledge of SaaS products including solving for more than one user persona.
-
User focused. You dive headfirst into understanding the needs of employers and build products grounded in data and research.
Bonus Areas of Expertise:
-
Development of B2B products connecting to a marketplace platform (e.g. the supplier side of an e-commerce marketplace)

About Handshake
How we got started Handshake was started in 2014 by Garrett Lord, Scott Ringwelski and Ben Christensen - three students from Michigan Tech, an engineering school in the far reaches of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Surrounded by more than 200 inches of annual snowfall and an eight-hour drive from Chicago or Detroit, Michigan Tech doesn’t see many recruiters from outside of the Midwest. Garrett was particularly frustrated about the difficulty Michigan Tech engineering students faced in getting in the door at top tech companies. So after hustling nonstop to get a Silicon Valley internship of his own, he took matters into his own hands and started brokering intros for his classmates to Bay Area companies. He earned $60k in referral bonuses in less than a year, and paid his way through college. Encouraged by the impact one person could make at one campus, Garrett, Scott, and Ben bought an old car and drove to college campuses across the country. They learned that students, employers and career centers were all frustrated by the current process, particularly how student access to opportunities was so unequal. So they formed Handshake to transform university recruiting for the 20 million higher education students across the country and ensure that every student would have the same access to every job, no matter where they go to school. Today, Handshake is a fast-growing team of 80 based in San Francisco. We partner with 400+ universities, uniting them into one powerful network, which makes it easy for 200,000 companies to recruit efficiently beyond their traditional “core” schools, increasing the breadth and scope of opportunities for our 8,000,000 students, and giving our partner universities the data and tools they need to help their students build meaningful careers.
