We have a unique opportunity for a Technical Architect to join Kobalt Music and define, lead and execute a major architectural change of Kobalt’s business critical core application.

This role represents one of the most important technical hires we have made in recent years. It will be highly visible not only within Kobalt but also in its impact on the wider music industry.

The goal is to improve our systems performance, security and reliability and to build for scale to suit a changing and growing business. 

Working closely with the CTO, CPO, SVPs of Technology and engineering managers, this role acts as the technical authority on the detail of a new architecture and will be instrumental in its delivery.

The person fulfilling this role must inspire confidence at all levels to manage the business and team through the transition.


Founded in 2000 by Willard Ahdritz, Kobalt is creating the music company of the future. Kobalt is a global music and technology company built for artists, songwriters, publishers and labels as an alternative to the traditional music business model. Kobalt have built the technology infrastructure to enable better reporting and for artists to maintain ownership and control over how their work is distributed, tracked, collected, and monetized.  This global technology platform is able to track and collect royalties for the billions of micro-payments per song in digital music today.

Kobalt’s tech platform, KTech, is currently responsible for sending worldwide notifications of all clients’ songs; and it delivers albums, singles and videos to a whole host of digital services, including iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and many others. It also licenses use of clients work in TV, Film, Games and Adverts. Once all of that has been done, it then has the not-so-small job of processing the millions of resulting payments.

This is an established yet fast growing creator-centric company of artists and songwriters including The Chainsmokers, Kelly Clarkson, Miles Davis, Dave Grohl, Lauv, Zayn Malik, Max Martin, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Pitbull, Elvis Presley, Skrillex, Sam Smith, and many more. Kobalt represents on average over 40% of the top 100 songs and albums in both the US and UK.

We’re currently 600 people based across 10 offices and we’re still growing.


  • Liaise with business and technical stakeholders to understand business workflow, product roadmap and strategic system requirements
  • Review current architecture and identify dependencies and system complexity
  • Produce detailed documentation of current and planned system architecture
  • Devise a technical architecture that delivers to business goals and maintains service continuity
  • Develop Proof of Concepts to de-risk and demonstrate architectural principals
  • Define and implement a technical migration plan and business change programme
  • Steer activities of the program at both a strategic and operational level
  • Manage risk issues and dependencies across technical and business change
  • Build credibility and trust at all levels
  • Coach and guide all technology teams to adopt new approaches and new technology as appropriate
  • Support ongoing architecture needs of the business and contribute to strategic technical decision-making


We would get great comfort from a candidate having deep Java, Oracle/PL/SQL experience at some point in their career but also need a wider range of technical capability so we can choose the best long-term solutions

The best person for this role will have demonstrable experience in initiating, leading and delivering a major architecture change for a tech-dependent business. Your strong technical ability and commercial acumen will allow you to unpick our complex technical system architecture and business domain and offer a clear and sustainable path to change.

The role will require a pragmatic approach and willingness to code or provide close development support to engineering teams. You will need to influence and persuade colleagues of your plans in a humble and respectful manner.
