News Design Director

Mic is hiring a News Design Director to oversee the creative direction and execution of Mic’s editorial design. You will manage a small team of talented designers, and liaise with other key stakeholders across the newsroom - from producers and editors, to senior leaders. This role will set a high bar for Mic’s design standards and innovate on new ways of visual storytelling.

This position is based in our New York City office.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold design standards for Mic’s newsroom and visual storytelling
  • Review each piece of artwork that is published on Mic and its channels
  • Providing creative direction to the team for each individual project - ie photo collage bright with imagery
  • Instill creative review process/edit process
  • Introduce new ways of visual storytelling to our newsroom
  • Ensure Mic’s design aesthetic is streamlined and consistent across all consumer facing platforms/experiences
  • Partner with editorial stakeholders on new design concepts
  • Run licensing with our photo wire services

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of editorial design: graphic, motion, photo, illustration
  • Previous experience managing a small a team
  • Skilled in developing new visual identities for series, concepts, etc
  • Animation and video editing experience a plus
