DreamWorks Technology - Universal Scene Description Specialist

Level: Manager (Supervisor)


The Universal Scene Description (USD) Specialist role on the R&D Production Engineering team is responsible for overseeing the USD pipeline at the studio. They will partner with production stakeholders and other technology teams to both support and augment the studio’s existing USD tools and workflows, as well as help develop new ones.

Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and iteratively improve the DreamWorks USD shot and asset model to support new USD features, new schemas, and updated requirements of production
  • Design, coordinate cross-departmental approval, implement, maintain, and document new USD schemas, file format plugins, and other USD extensions to support integration with the DreamWorks pipeline and toolset
  • Coordinate with production and R&D stakeholders to deploy and integrate new USD features, asset model changes, and pipeline tools
  • Monitor the public development of USD and coordinate and advocate for production adoption of new USD versions and schemas
  • Plan and implement USD version upgrades, including USD plugins and third party tools
  • Troubleshoot USD and USD plugin runtime environment and build issues
  • Training and support of TD and R&D developers with understanding USD and its API’s
  • Manage internal git repositories (C++ and Python) for USD plugins, extensions, and pipeline code and coordinate deployments
  • Coordinate open-source releases of DreamWorks USD tools and pull requests to the USD project


● Deep understanding of USD and using USD to drive feature production pipelines
● 4+ years of professional Python development experience
● Software development using Linux (or UNIX derivative)
● Strong verbal and written communication skills
● Self-motivated and detailed approach to problem solving

● B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, or equivalent degree
● 4+ year professional VFX/Animation pipeline development experience
● Good understanding of source control and build tools (git/github, CMake, Scons)
● Familiarity with commercial Animation / VFX tools DCC’s (Maya, Houdini, etc)
