Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform Architecture

Netflix, Los Gatos, California

Leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies

Netflix is the leading online video subscription service, reaching over 100 million households across the globe.  Netflix became well known as a data driven company for our personalized recommendations, but our use of data doesn't stop there.  From testing new features for the website to measuring performance across many devices to making wise choices about content, we use our petabytes of data to move the business forward. To do that we have built a big data platform that, along with the rest of our infrastructure, lives in the cloud and will continue to grow with us as we expand.

Engineers and data scientists across the company use the data platform to do interesting and impactful analysis allowing Netflix to continue to innovate.  Our team works to make it as easy and efficient as possible to work with all of this data.  We leverage a lot of cutting-edge open source technologies and adapt them to our cloud infrastructure to ensure they scale to the data and are self-service for our teams to use.

We are looking for an engineer that will spearhead our projects to build an intelligent data platform.  You will be leading other engineers while designing and building new services that will be the way that Netflix uses our data platform.  While we are part of the big data platform, your mandate will be to build services that scale to user focused problems, like predicting when jobs will run, efficiently scheduling work on the platform, or making it easy to understand what work is running, how it is performing, and responding to problems.  That means that there is opportunity to work with tools and technologies from Jupyter notebooks, to Python and ElasticSearch, to Spark, and a lot in between.  If you are someone that loves challenges and working with and leading other engineers to build great things, this is the role for you.

This may be your dream job if some of the following applies to you:

  • Value simplicity and clarity in design. Our engineering strongly reflects this value.
  • Want to build a platform to solve interesting data problems.
  • Have experience with distributed systems.
  • Pride yourself as an expert software engineer.
  • Have a bias to action and the experience and judgement to move quickly in the right direction.
  • Love to work with open source technologies like Jupyter, Spark, etc.
  • Love to build software in the cloud.
  • Desire to be constantly learning new things and can make good forward thinking judgements about new technology.
  • Have a BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or related field.

Technologies we use:

  • Python, Javascript, as well as a few others for development.
  • Git for source control.
  • Docker for many things.
  • Jupyter and Zeppelin for providing development and analysis platforms .
  • AWS as well as many internal (and open source) tools that Netflix has built.
  • The right technologies for the problem at hand. We're flexible and open to rapid change.
