Senior Analytics Engineer - Streaming Video Delivery

Netflix, Los Gatos, California

Leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies

Netflix makes up 1/3 of North American internet traffic, and we're proud to deliver content that 100+ million customers enjoy around the world. Behind the scenes, all video is delivered by Open Connect, a purpose-built content delivery network that connects Netflix directly to our members when they stream.
As our global footprint expands, we’re encountering a variety of networks that challenge online streaming in unique ways, like highly variable bandwidth or lossy data transfer. A core goal of Netflix is ensuring our service works well for all members, so our network transport team is investing heavily in optimizing content delivery to ensure the best possible member experience across all network conditions.
In this role, you have end-to-end ownership over data processing, tools, visualization, analytics and statistical modeling. You’ll have significant autonomy and have tremendous impact by developing and validating data-driven mental models for how changes in internet protocol impact our member experience. You’ll work cross-functionally with product engineering teams to optimize the delivery of video bytes from Open Connect servers to the millions of customer devices that stream our content.

Upcoming projects:

  • Armed with terabytes of rich, millisecond-level time series data, what characteristics successfully distinguish cellular networks from wifi networks? How can Netflix improve the streaming experience on different network types through offline and online analysis?
  • Netflix is investing in a best-in-class network lab environment for controlled tests. How can our real-world production data inform the right lab test parameters?
  • Deep partnership and collaboration with client teams whose adaptive streaming algorithm powers the Netflix video streaming experience on members’ devices. How does network performance impact application performance? How can we improve both?
  • Opportunity for collaboration with other industry-leading internet streaming companies.

Experience desired:

  • Self-managing cross-functional projects fueled by ambiguous questions
  • Data access and manipulation (Python, SQL and variants like Presto)
  • Data processing at large scale (Spark, Hive or Java)
  • Large-scale storage and retrieval (Hadoop, ElasticSearch or Druid)
  • Visualization techniques and tools (Tableau, JavaScript)
  • Applied statistics
  • Partnership and strong communication with engineering or product teams
  • Prior knowledge of networking and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) are not required as long as you have passion and curiosity to learn
Netflix Culture:
Netflix's culture is unique, and we live by our values. People who thrive here are comfortable working in the most agile of environments. Requirements will be vague, and iterations will be rapid. You will need to be nimble, proactive, and able to take smart risks.
We are an equal opportunity employer and celebrate diversity, recognizing that diversity of thought and background creates stronger teams. We approach diversity and inclusion seriously and thoughtfully. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
