Director of Studio UX Research

Netflix, Los Angeles, California

Leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies

Netflix is revolutionizing entertainment. We deliver billions of hours of movies and TV shows per month to more than 130 million accounts globally. A core part of our mission is to produce an amazing and diverse array of owned content that delights our expansive global audience.

The Netflix Studio is at the forefront of this creative revolution.

From script to screen, from concept to execution, the way films are made and marketed is changing, and the Studio UX Lead will play a critical role in the modernization of this creative process. They will partner with Design, Product Management, Engineers, and Data Scientists as well as directly with studio, production, and marketing talent inside and outside of the company to create a competitive advantage for Netflix. They will build a team from the ground up tasked with uncovering pain points, unmet needs, or workarounds which inspire innovations that optimize the flow of content and assets through the Netflix Studio. They will do this by leading and empowering teams through qualitative and quantitative research that brings clarity to this large, complex problem space where art and science collide.

The Ideal Background:

  • Effective verbal and written communication style distilling complex multi-method research reports into understandable, compelling, and actionable insights
  • A graduate degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Human-computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors, Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, Business, Market research or similar

What You'll Be Doing:

  • You will provide an inspiring vision and leadership for your team to set priorities, scale for growth and elevate impact
  • You will embed in functions spanning pitch evaluation, programming analysis, production management, post-production, and marketing - to develop and synthesize workflow needs and user insights
  • You will be an in-team practice leader and coach for a growing design practice center, supporting your colleagues in implementing their own evaluative research tools and methodologies
  • You will be working and collaborating with some of the smartest people you have ever met in a fast-paced culture that acts like a start-up with the resources and vision of a large company
  • You will be the voice of the user across the Netflix Studio
  • You will travel (20-25%) with autonomy to increase/decrease based on project
  • Your research outcomes will translate directly into business and product impact, guiding the development of the worlds largest and most technically advanced content studio

Who you are:

  • You are comfortable putting a stake in the ground, even without all of the data you need
  • You actively seek out answers to questions that are verging on impossible to answer
  • When something needs to get done, you are the first to roll up your sleeves
  • You make the connections no one else sees
  • You stand firm in the face of change and challenge
  • You read the Netflix culture memo and were energized
  • You are quick-witted, straight-forward, and succinct
  • You are equal parts creative and analytical
  • You are fully aware of and open about when and how you fail and when and how you succeed
  • You are embarrassed by anything that is not amazing with your name on it
