Director, Production Counsel Training Program

Netflix, Los Angeles, California

Leading subscription service for watching TV episodes and movies

The Opportunity
Netflix is changing the way more than 100 million subscribers around the world enjoy entertainment. As a company, we challenge industry norms by challenging one another to think creatively about difficult problems. Our production legal team is no exception. We think critically about the range of legal issues that face our productions -- from scripted and unscripted series to features and international productions -- and we act in a manner consistent with our larger culture of freedom and responsibility, one marked by a bias toward action, by leaning into smart risks and taking ownership of bold decisions.

As we continue to grow, Netflix seeks a veteran production attorney who is capable of training, mentoring, and molding the next generation of lawyers as they oversee our cutting edge productions. The successful candidate will have seen it all and done it all across a variety of production contexts and, most importantly, will have the ability to help junior attorneys we have identified as the best and brightest rise to any occasion. Motivated by a desire to replicate her  own excellence in others, she will help shape the future of production legal through hands-on work at its most dynamic and progressive home.

This individual will be charged with developing an in-house production legal training program to meet the growth of our rapidly expanding Content Legal team. The program will be designed to build a continuous pipeline of homegrown production lawyers for Netflix Studios’ series, feature, documentary, unscripted, kids and family programming. In addition to broad-based production legal experience, the ideal candidate will be a natural teacher and be able to work collaboratively with internal business partners to design and roll out the program.

Sample curriculum will include but not be limited to:

Entertainment law basics, to build a solid foundation of knowledge in content distribution models, windowing and exclusivity, the roles of industry players (agents, managers, studios, networks, etc.), feature and series financing, and relevant IP law (e.g., copyright, trademark, rights of publicity).

The nuts and bolts of development, including book, article, or script options, pitch and spec sales, format deals, real people and “life story” rights, chain of title analysis, and the hiring of writers for bibles, treatments, scripts, etc.

Production 101, including key players (creative, physical production, production finance, labor, music, credits, safety, risk management, etc.) and issue-spotting during prep and post; personal services agreements for actors, producers, directors, showrunners and key crew, various location and release agreements and related production agreements; and production oversight.

The key aspects of how and why developing, producing, and releasing content for Netflix is different from more traditional studios.

The Role
The successful candidate will partner with both the Talent Development team and business leaders to design and implement a robust training curriculum, incorporating both classroom and on-the-job training. She will ensure that those who complete the training program will have a solid understanding of  development and production and are on a path to managing projects with minimal supervision.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • 12+ years of extensive development and production legal experience across multiple genres (e.g., scripted, unscripted, TV and features, live action and animation)
  • Experience teaching and mentoring highly preferred and an ability to distill complex legal and business concepts into teachable and digestible components required
  • Previous experience supervising legal staff along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment
  • An ability to learn our business, understand our culture, and foster a similar spirit of learning and continuous development in others
  • J.D. and membership in good standing of at least one state bar
