At Pivotal, Silicon Valley is a State of Mind

Staff Network Operations Engineer APAC

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

-Robert A. Heinlein

Design it. Build it. Manage it. Make it hum.

Pivotal is seeking one seasoned, senior level network operations engineer to join our Infrastructure Operations (IOPS) team in designing, building and managing our physical, virtual and cloud based infrastructure.

Do you experience a sublime thrill from watching packets traverse the world across a network that you helped design? Does the idea of building and running a secure enterprise network for thousands of users, but with the in-built agility of a 20-person startup, take your breath away? Then we’d like to meet you.

Who is Pivotal?

Founded in 2013, Pivotal Software, Inc., combines our leading cloud-native platform, tools, and methodology to empower the world’s largest organizations to adapt to change and build great software. Our technology unleashes developer productivity, while fulfilling our mission to transform how the world builds software.

What does Pivotal IOPS team do?

IOPS team is Pivotal’s Infrastructure Operations team. We build and manage the core IT infrastructure for Pivotal which includes the core networks, systems, applications and services necessary for the rest Pivotal to function smoothly. This includes everything from the WAN to Wi-Fi to DNS to firewalls to applications like IPAM and DCIM. We believe that practically everything can be defined and managed in software and we can manage switches, deploy VMs and write code. We maintain the entire global infrastructure and as such, our staff is distributed across many locations. We are diverse, welcoming, and we work very closely together.

What do we need from you?

As one senior level network and systems engineering talent and experience. You will be the senior IOPS engineer in the Asia-Pacific region, and most of your teammates will be in different time zones, so effective independence and comfort with remote collaboration is a must. You should be as comfortable tossing up a BSD router in a pinch as you are designing and maintaining the connections between globally distributed MPLS clouds. We don’t need to list routing protocols, you already know them. You should be able to offer and deliver solutions using many technologies, and not be bound to one vendor.

While this position is network-heavy, you should be comfortable in physical and virtualized environments for both networking and systems. Pivotal is a Mac shop on the front end and a *nix shop on the backend. You should also be familiar with cloud-based infrastructures such as vSphere, AWS and GCP.  You don’t need to be a full-tilt developer but we write and maintain code and you should be familiar at least a couple programming languages such as Python or Ruby. We also use agile methodologies as much as possible, so familiarity with Kanban, XP, etc. is a big plus. We will work with many teams, communicate with many people, work with vendors, stay within budgets and meet deadlines. We design, plan, implement and maintain and we’re all as likely to deploy a switch as we are to sit down with executives. We share, communicate and train each other.  We do travel as needed, but not all the time.

What technologies do you use?

Some keywords, of many, with no particular order or grouping: Juniper, Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, Meraki, OSPF, BGP, SD-WAN, GlobalProtect, Silverpeak, NAC, LDAP, vSphere, Apache, Nginx, DNS, DHCP, Chef, Python, Ruby, iptables, Graylog, MIT KRB5, AWS, NAS, iSCSI, git, SVN, IPAM, DCIM, SAML, DevOps, RANCID.

Qualifications and factors for success:

  • 7+ years experience with small, medium and/or enterprise infrastructures.
  • The desire and ability to lead projects and potentially small teams.
  • Very strong networking skill and competency from Layer 2 to Layer 7, bonus for Cisco and Juniper experience.
  • Strong security skills including firewall experience, bonus for Palo Alto Networks.
  • Experience with virtualization and cloud technologies such as vSphere, AWS, GCP, etc.
  • Strong experience with multiple flavors of *nix and Windows.
  • Programming skill in relevant languages such as Python, Ruby or Perl, is desirable.
  • The ability to develop creative solutions to problems, complex and mundane.
  • Strong team collaboration skills along with the ability to work independently.
  • Experience working with globally distributed networks, sites and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels of technical expertise and seniority, inside and outside the organization, both verbally and in writing.
  • Education and certification is desirable but not required.
