Overview

Segment’s Cloud App Sources product daily extracts 12 billions rows of data from a large variety of third-party services, adapts it to Segment’s schema and loads it into Segment. This lets our customers get a complete view of how their own customers interact with them by consolidating all the relevant data in downstream systems, including 4,400 customer data warehouses. In addition to extracting and loading the data, we also deduplicate records and merge partial updates into full records.

We aim to give customers a seamless experience that would, otherwise, require them to invest in a lot of engineering effort on things that are not their core business. A number of our customers operate mission-critical processes on this data, making it unacceptable for us to lose or corrupt even a single update.

What we do

The Segment Cloud Sources team builds and maintains a large-scale multi-tenant ETL pipeline as well as a variety of user-facing tools that lets customers define and monitor the transformations they want. This requires a team that, as a whole, is equally capable of writing high performance and ultra reliable data processing code as it is writing highly interactive and user-focused user interfaces for other integration developers. The team is empowered to define and deliver the destiny of their product.

More recently, we added features that directly empower our customers even more by letting them define custom functions that lets them translate data between any external system and Segment’s Cloud App Sources. We are currently focused on delivering a world-class developer experience that lets customers load data from any system imaginable into Segment without ever having to leave Segment’s app. This is part of our larger initiative to expose even more of Segment’s internal platform to customers to empower them to use Segment the way they want to.

Some of the specific things team members do:
  • Implement proof-of-concepts for new product ideas and demo it internally.
  • Implement and maintain integrations which allows us to extract data from new systems to a high production standard.
  • Implement and maintain the distributed systems which comprise the Cloud App Sources pipeline to a high production standard.
  • Own the design and implementation of new features or enhancements to existing features from concept through to production.
  • Deploy changes to production in a way which respects our customers’ dependence on us by maintaining a very high operational reliability bar.
  • Investigate and fix issues and anomalies reported by customers or flagged by our internal alerting systems.
  • Respond to on-call alerts to resolve issues in a way which meets customer expectations.
  • Maintain systems we use internally to efficiently operate and develop the systems which serves our customers.
  • Sometimes lead projects and sometimes follow someone else’s lead on a project.

Who we are looking for

As a developer at Segment on the Sources team, you will work alongside other skilled developers, product leads, front-end developers, and success engineers to craft high-performance and highly operable services that will scale to support our rapidly growing user base. You will empower Segment’s mission of data synthesis, building trust with our customers in our 100% reliable, astonishingly flexible and immensely powerful data delivery.

We are looking for team members with the following traits:
  • A good understanding of the compute model, including concurrency.
  • Writes code that is sufficiently optimal and reliable.
  • Can ship an imperfect solution and can spend hours refining design details. Knows when to push back and when to ship.
  • A reasonable understanding of how distributed systems operate and, more importantly, fail.
  • A need to own things end-to-end. It’s never “not my problem”.
  • Appreciates the meaning of “the sum is greater than the whole of the parts” when it comes to working in a team.
  • Strong mechanical empathy and experience operating always-on cloud systems at scale (or a strong desire to do so).
  • Strong customer focus and empathy and the ability to do right by the customer.
  • Experience writing code in a modern language and a willingness to learn the languages we regularly use (Go, JavaScript and Python).
  • Experience with modern cloud infrastructure and technologies.
  • Happy to get out of the comfort zone and explore areas beyond existing skill set.

About Segment

About us Segment is a fast-growing startup building a platform for collecting customer data. We provide a single API to track customer data across multiple devices and channels, and send it to third-party tools, internal systems, or a SQL database with the flip of a switch. Segment eliminates the need to write code to integrate new tools, which saves time and removes dependencies across teammates. By consolidating tracking to one API, Segment sends consistent, complete data to every tool and database where companies need to use it. Segment is small, so everyone has a huge impact. With just a handful of people, we’re already processing billions of API calls every month. We love open sourcing our code and writing down everything we’ve learned. If you want to make an impact, and are excited about how data can change organizations, we want you.
