The Restaurants team at Square is reimagining the hospitality industry to free today’s restaurants from crippling, archaic software, and inefficient workflows.  We’re diners, fans, and admirers of the people working in the food and drink business and we want to do our part to help them succeed.

We are taking a fresh look at this industry and building a modern product ecosystem that capitalizes on the themes of efficiency, automation, and reliability – which are becoming the cornerstones of the new breed of hospitality tools. In the dining room, Square sees the Point of Sale becoming increasingly mobile and moving to the diner, while restaurants realize new revenue streams that both complement and compete with their front of house businesses. We’re addressing the needs of restaurants in this dynamic landscape with intuitive yet sophisticated iOS, Android, and web-based software that integrates seamlessly with our hardware, all backed by reliable services.

The Restaurants Growth & Engagement team is focused on helping our customers grow up with Square. We make it easier for them to get started using our software, and once they’re up and running, we help them make the best use of the Square ecosystem.

We’re also the main team in Restaurants responsible for our powerful web-based app, Dashboard. Restaurant managers and owners use Dashboard to create and manage their accounts, manage their menus, configure their Points of Sale, take in reporting that helps them understand their customers and their business, and more.

We work hard to ensure that Dashboard presents an elegant, intuitive UI so that our customers can get the most out of our extremely flexible product suite. Our customers can get up and running themselves, a first for the industry – and they tell us they’re able to take direct control of Square for Restaurants like no competing product. 

What you will learn and do

  • You'll help create beautiful, unique products which allow anyone to evaluate our products, set up a restaurant, understand their customers, and run and grow their business – using desktop and mobile browsers
  • You’ll work with different parts of Square to present a seamless experience, showing how our ecosystem Just Works for restaurants

  • You’ll ship reliable software through continuous integration, test automation, and in-depth code reviews

What you bring to the team and to Square

  • Innate curiosity and a desire to build beautiful, sophisticated, intuitive products for the food and drink service industry
  • Motivation to design and build reliable products

  • Real empathy for your audience working in restaurants, and for your colleagues at Square

  • Eagerness to share your own ideas, and openness to those of others

  • A collaborative approach to designing and building apps with your teammates and with other teams and offices

  • Strong programming and software development skills

  • A history of mentorship and making those around you better

  • Experience picking up new technologies

We’re looking for someone with a bachelor’s degree in computer science (or an equivalent degree), and 6-8 years of professional software development experience.

Technologies we use and teach

  • Component-based Javascript/ES6 web application development with Ember.js

  • Codemods, linters, yarn, and npm for maintaining our large, active code base

  • Protobuf for service APIs

  • Full-stack opportunities with services in Ruby, Java, and Go
