We’re laser focused on our international expansion and building on the stellar growth we have achieved in Europe and, more recently, in Asia. It’s our #1 focus this year and will be a key lever in continuing to scale our business significantly over the next 18 months. Establishing and enhancing the existing relationships and infrastructure we have here with Rail Operators is critical to our success, and this role will give you the opportunity to play a major part in our international growth.
 
Reporting to the Head of Legal for Carrier & Operations, you’ll be focused on providing a senior legal steer to the business and leading the legal support on projects aimed at driving and developing the growth of Trainline’s UK, European & International Rail & Coach business, as well as to Trainline’s Tech and Operations business areas - relationships that underpin our ticket retailing business. Your role will span many aspects of commercial law with a particular focus on commercial and technology contracts as well as e-commerce and data protection law-related advice. This will include outsourcing arrangements, data licencing, software licence and support, cloud services, and e-commerce contracts. In the current climate, your knowledge and experience of data protection and GDPR in particular will be vital.
 
As Senior Legal Counsel – Carrier & Operations, you’ll develop a close understanding of our business objectives and approach to risk, assimilating these aspects into your advice around contracts and other operational matters. Further, you’ll use this understanding to proactively identify broader business opportunities both in the UK and Europe, in a dynamic regulatory environment. 
 
Our supplier relationships with UK European and International Rail & Coach Operators are vital to our business. You’ll be responsible for a number of operator-related technology and content licensing arrangements, as well as customer contracts with our Rail Operator clients including our ‘white label’ arrangements, and will lead negotiations in complex and demanding areas. This means that you will have the opportunity to play a major part in our international roll out. Additionally, you’ll support other critical areas such as payment and settlement arrangements, and other non-consumer-facing projects within Trainline.
 
In this role, you’ll be given the opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of the Legal function and help Trainline realise its future vision. Experience
 
To achieve our ambitious plans, we’re looking for creative big thinkers with small egos.  Most importantly, you’ll be qualified in English law, with a minimum of 4/5 years’ PQE, and will ideally have strong private practice and in-house experience, preferably with an online, e-commerce or tech focused business.  It goes without saying that you will be highly competent in consumer, commercial, e-commerce and data protection law
 
A team player with excellent communications skills, you must be able to work cross-functionally, and possess strong influencing skills. You must be comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment, dealing with complex legal issues.  In addition, you must be commercially astute and demonstrate a strong understanding of business. An ability to speak another European language would be useful although not essential.
