The SQL Server DBA will primarily be responsible for availability and support of our core databases running different versions of SQL Server in our Production Environments.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to support other environments that contribute to our ability to deliver software at a rapid rate, this includes Development and Test as well as back office and supporting infrastructure, most of which is hosted in AWS with some physical hardware.
As we are hosted in AWS we are looking for somebody who is a practical/hands-on SQL Server DBA with deep knowledge and experience in RDBMS, project implementation and production support, but who is also interested in the latest database technology and standards (Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift).

What You'll Be Working On:

  • Administration and support of Production database services to ensure the highest standards of availability, resilience, security and performance as required by our business
  • Install, configure and upgrade SQL Server and related products; patch management and version control including Cumulative Updates & Service Packs
  • Configuring and administering SQL Server/Windows Cluster resources and troubleshooting errors
  • Administration, implementation and support of Always-On, Database Mirroring, Transactional Replication & Log Shipping
  • Design, plan and implement database maintenance tasks across the SQL Server estate
  • Establishing and maintaining sound backup and recovery policies and procedures
  • Implement, document and maintain database security in line with PCI compliance and best practices
  • Perform database tuning and performance monitoring
  • Work as part of a team schedule to provide 24x7 support
  • Management of internal and external customers such that they always get the best service possible
  • Providing support for other RDBMSs like Oracle, MySQL etc.
  • Mentoring junior team members and Platform Operations Engineers
  • Contribute to Change and Incident processes as appropriate

What You'll Bring

  • 3+ year’s solid production experience in the SQL Server product area
  • Experience with SQL Server 2012+ administration in a high transactional 24/7 OLTP environment
  • Strong experience/understanding of Windows Server 2008 & 2012 on virtual machines, cloud infrastructure and physical blades
  • SQL Server performance and tuning skills including server configuration, profiling and extended events
  • Good experience of migrating databases across instances/servers/domains
  • Backup/Recovery Principals
  • Practical experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service (Foglight, SCOM, AWS Cloudwatch)
  • MS SQL Server Clustering, Always-On & Mirroring
  • Hands on knowledge of isolation levels, collations & resolving deadlocks
  • Database Programming (T-SQL)
  • Designing and implementing ETL packages using SQL Server Integration Services
  • Experience of operating in a Change Management environment with good understanding of frameworks and processes 
  • Support other database systems such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, etc.

  • Linux skills
  • Third party backup software (Quest Litespeed, IBM TSM)
  • Ability to identify and drive technology and process improvements
  • Database design - physical & logical architecture.
  • AWS EC2, RDS, Cloudformation
