The Legal team has been instrumental in supporting the business through its continued expansion. Headed up by James Hanratty (a Legal leader in Digital & Technology), this is an award-winning legal team, who have won multiple industry accolades in recent years including ‘In-House Team of the Year’ at the Lexis Nexis Legal Awards in 2019 and ‘Legal Department of the Year’ at the British Legal Awards in 2018, as well as being nominated for Legal Week’s Innovation Awards in 2019. Striking a balance between being innovative and high performing yet remaining close-knit and highly supportive of one another, this is a highly regarded team of high caliber lawyers where people genuinely enjoy what they do and make a difference to the business every day!

Reporting into the Head of Legal – UK Regulatory and Industry Affairs, the role will involve a variety of high-profile and strategic work. You will also provide legal support to our International Carrier and Supply Team as they spearhead our continued international expansion – in particular, by providing white label services to European carrier partners and providing rail content to our B2B clients via our International API. You will also provide legal support to help develop the growth of Trainline’s global consumer business, advising, drafting, reviewing and negotiating on a wide range of commercial matters in a both a B2B and B2C capacity, and working cross-functionally with a huge range of innovative consumer facing areas of Trainline’s business.

You will be providing legal support to deliver Trainline’s industry strategy, where we work with a wide range of external stakeholders – for example, in government and within regulators – to help deliver the reforms proposed by the Williams-Shapps Plan for rail and ultimately shape the future of rail retail. This will involve drafting bespoke correspondence or helping with consultation submissions and see you acting in an influencing and advisory capacity.

Finally, you can expect to take the lead in providing practical advice on a range of legal issues to support deliver our cutting-edge products and initiatives. This is high value, complex work, often with short turnaround times.

We’re looking for creative big thinkers with small egos to achieve our ambitious plans.

Most importantly, you’ll be qualified in English law or an equivalent foreign law jurisdiction, with 1-2 years’ PQE (although if it’s more or less than this, it’s not a show stopper), and will ideally have private practice and in-house experience, preferably with an online or tech focused business. It goes without saying that you will have a strong general commercial lawyer, with an understanding contract and data protection law. Some exposure to intellectual property law and regulatory matters (including an understanding of competition law) would be a plus.

A team player with excellent communication skills, you must be able to work cross-functionally, and possess strong influencing skills. You must be comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment, dealing with complex legal issues and supporting the business in taking risk-based decisions based on your advice. In addition, you’ll need to be commercially astute and demonstrate a strong understanding of business.


  • The core part of the role will involve supporting the execution of our industry strategy in response to the reforms proposed in the UK rail sector. This will involve:
  • drafting amendments to the core license Trainline has in place, which enables access to UK rail supply, as well as providing general advice on those terms and restrictions
  • working with a wide variety of stakeholders, often in the public sector and providing legal support for those engagements, for example, by drafting bespoke correspondence, producing other written materials or supporting with consultation submissions.
  • The role will also encompass the drafting, negotiation and interpretation of commercial contracts in respect of Trainline acting as:
  • a partner to rail organisations in Europe and beyond
  • supplier when providing rail booking solutions to business entities
  • Providing general legal advice in respect of commercial, data protection, regulatory and contract law to the UK and international elements of our business.
  • Providing strategic legal support on critical business projects.
  • Working autonomously in respect of the provision of contractual and general legal advice.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Essential:
  • English law (or an equivalent foreign law jurisdiction) qualified, with a current practicing certificate.
  • Strong general commercial experience.
  • Demonstrable team player and must be able to work cross functionally.
  • An ability to ‘self-start’ confidently and effectively.
  • Ability to work with other legal team members, outside counsel and business stakeholders, including knowing when to raise matters internally / when a second opinion may be needed. Strong communication and influencing skills, including in respect of senior management colleagues and negotiating with partners and suppliers.
  • Effective organisational and prioritisation skills will be required to successfully manage your own workload and the business’ expectations.
  • Commercially astute.
  • Excellent English language skills (written and oral).

  • Desired:
  • As a guideline, we expect this role will require between 1- 2 years’ PQE, but are attitude and approach are more important – and applicants with more or less PQE are welcomed.
  • A combination of private practice and in-house experience with tech/online focus (particularly in a fast-moving business) preferred.
  • Multi-jurisdictional experience a bonus.
  • French, Spanish, Italian or German language skills would be a plus.
