About the Engineering Efficiency team
If the aim of software engineering at Trussle is to build a house, then the Engineering Efficiency squad is the team responsible for the foundations, tools, plumbing, and equipment! They look after the AWS cloud platforms, QA testing, and data initiatives supporting the Engineering and Operations teams. Their efforts also cover automation and systems architecture, and they strive to keep the continuous delivery pipelines as robust and as reliable as possible. We optimise to fail fast and fail often so that bugs and errors are caught quickly before they make it in front of users.
About Engineering at Trussle
Borrowing heavily from Spotify’s model of organising teams, the team is split into autonomous squads. These cross-functional groups focus on solving problems in a specific business area:
- The Acquisition team aim to optimise for growth by understanding the needs of customers. This squad supports the commercial and marketing side of the business, building tools to help them react faster and reach a wider audience. They also develop, run and analyse A/B tests to optimise our website, partnerships and marketing.
- The Scalability team aim to make our operations more efficient. In this squad, your customers are your colleagues: you are constantly improving internal systems used by our mortgage advisers and customer success associates every day to ensure our technology scales with our growth ambitions.
- The Engineering Efficiency team aims to make software delivery at Trussle more efficient, across product, data and QA. In this squad your customers are your colleagues in engineering as well as key stakeholders across the business. As a Senior Systems Engineer, we expect you to support the other squads with their infrastructure and software delivery concerns, by building tools and defining new processes to automate as much as possible.
About the role
We are looking for an outstanding Senior Systems Engineer (SSE) to help the team in optimising the effectiveness of Trussle’s cloud infrastructure. More specifically, we are looking for the following outcomes in this hire -
Reliable acceleration - this could involve but is not limited to defining, building and maintaining infrastructure, services and processes that help accelerate our application teams. The advocating of topics such as monitoring performance and reliability, and establishing a strong continuous delivery culture throughout our product engineering team could also fall within scope. The key is to lead through results and influence to ensure we balance reliability with innovation at all times.
Pragmatic and solutions focused - we make use of Kubernetes and ECS on AWS, Prometheus, Go and nodeJS. We are moving away from kubernetes to ECS, more on this here. However, what is most important is your ability to learn and apply tools and technology to solve problems. Inspiring engineers as to modern infrastructure and development tools is also important - our infrastructure has to be reliable and, as much as possible, automated to scale with our rapidly growing engineering teams.
Customer centered - the last, but not least, important criterion is focus on our customers and business mission. This unites us all but, as a custodian of our cloud infrastructure you, in particular, are in charge of centering our debates and driving a culture of customer-focused decision making when it comes to readiness and reliability. You are able to drive results through collaborative influence, advising product teams to design highly available services.

We believe that the following skills (or equivalent experience) could serve you well in this role:
Clear results focus - this skill could have been gained through experience working in a product led organisation with significant and constant stakeholder feedback loops, ideally at a leading institution. You know how to distill natural language requirements into robust technical ones that you and your fellow engineers deliver on consistently
Technical skills - You will understand and have experience operating a container scheduler/resource manager on AWS or similar. You also have commercial experience of either Go or Node.js along with one other programming language (or more!). Having experienced the strengths and weaknesses of microservices in a growing engineering team will serve you well, alongside a deep knowledge and war stories of containerisation and exposure to a wide range of AWS services. You take pride in and have automated the pain-points of fellow developers successfully before. You are comfortable with the concepts of immutable infrastructure, and have a solid understanding of the continuous delivery process, and the benefits of value-stream mapping.
