Who?

The Serverless team is looking for a Principal Engineer to help drive the future direction of our Serverless platform, and then help build it.

You're passionate about building and scaling high performance general computing platforms that follow the Serverless model. You delight in taking apart traditional software and turning it into discrete parts. You love building new systems that make it easier for other developers to do the same.

You’re comfortable working up and down the technology stack, as our serverless products include everything from the large-scale distributed backend that makes up Twilio Runtime to the gorgeous drag-and-drop visual interface of Twilio Studio. You’re a polyglot programmer (we have services in Java, Python, and Javascript), and have strong development skills in OO programming. You can think at scale, and have built high throughput, highly available services with an eye for operational stability. You’ve also seen systems break when deployed at scale and learned valuable lessons from those experiences. You love driving the design and architecture of systems and collaborating with the team to realize your vision, from diagrams to code to operations.

You communicate well in person, on paper and in code. You can reach buy-in on complex technical decisions. You love to make an impact and thrive in small, collaborative, energetic teams. Bachelor's degree in a computer science related field is a minimum requirement.

What?

You will be responsible for driving architecture and building systems for multiple orders of magnitude of growth. You’ll take full ownership of your services, from coding and testing to operations and monitoring. You’ll also have the opportunity to mentor and help grow engineers that range from Senior Engineers to Junior Apprentices, and provide technical mentoring and guidance to team members as they implement new services.

You’ll work closely with our product manager and engineering manager to craft and implement a roadmap for the future of Serverless. You’ll be an evangelist for the serverless platform both inside and outside the company.

Why?

The Twilio platform enables companies to integrate communications directly into their applications via simple cloud APIs and with on-demand global reach. But the infrastructure and operations required to deploy and scale software applications can be a hurdle. Our serverless products, including Twilio Studio, Twilio Functions, and more, empower our customers to quickly bring their ideas to prototype to production to global scale, all on top of Twilio's elastic cloud infrastructure.

Twilio is a company that is empowering the world’s developers with modern communication in order to build better applications. The Engineering team plays an integral role in building out the products that allow our developer community to meet their communication needs.

Twilio is truly unique; we are a company committed to your growth, your learning, your development and your entire employee experience.  We only win when our employees succeed and we're dedicated to helping you develop your strengths. We invest in weeks dedicated to tackling hard problems and creating your own ideas. We have a cultural foundation built on diversity, inclusion and innovation and we want you and your ideas to thrive at Twilio. Come join us.

Where?

This position will be located in our beautiful office at 375 Beale Street in San Francisco.  You should expect the normal perks: catered meals, snacks, game room, ergonomic desks, etc. What you will also get to experience is a company that believes in small teams for maximum impact; that strives to balance work and home life, we know this is a marathon not a sprint; that builds an inclusive culture where we want all of our people to be comfortable and thrive.  We seek out people who live by our values, who are challenged by problems, empower others to thrive, people who can draw the owl and not be beholden to one playbook.
