Senior Software Engineer - Discovery

Twitch has over 100 million users, and the Metadata, Recommendations, and Search team is responsible for building products that improve the discovery experience for both viewers and broadcasters. We are looking for a software engineer to contribute to key product roadmap items, recommendations, search and machine learning infrastructure, internal machine learning tools. 

You will have the opportunity to develop and work on high-profile elements of the Twitch architecture and help create large scale distributed systems. You will be working with other highly motivated team members on building next generation recommendation and search systems at scale, using cutting edge ML/AI algorithms. You will develop services to run on Amazon's cloud computing infrastructure (AWS) and have opportunities to interact with teams inside and outside the organization as well as work on a variety of challenging problems.


  • Build our platforms, systems and infrastructure using your strong background in large scale distributed systems
  • Participate and improve the whole lifecycle of service from inception and design, through development, deployment, operation and iterative refinement
  • Scale systems through mechanisms like automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity
  • Provide detailed and constructive design and code reviews
  • Maintain services once they are live by measuring and monitoring availability, latency and overall system health


  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • 3+ years of experience in building distributed systems
  • Experience with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design
  • 3+ years of experience in one or more of the following: C++, Python, Go, Java
  • Experience developing and deploying scalable applications in a cloud offering such as Amazon Web Services
  • Ability to develop, analyze, debug and optimize code involving concurrency
  • Hands on experience developing/working on any NoSQL DB
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Bonus Points

  • Hands on experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, SQS, ECS, ElasticCache, RDS etc.
  • Interest in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with strong communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive
  • Experience with Cassandra and/or Dynamo DB is a plus
  • Familiarity with AWS services like Kinesis, EMR, ElasticSearch, SNS, Elastic Beanstalk etc.
  • Avid user of Twitch or passion for video games
