Hill Reporter

Vox Media, Washington, DC

Shaping the future of journalism and entertainment

Vox Media employees thrive on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology and the world around them. The Vox Media house of brands includes industry-leading media forces like SB Nation, Eater, The Verge, Vox, Curbed, Recode, Racked and Polygon, and reaches an audience of hundreds of millions, generating over a billion content views each month.

Vox.com is a user’s guide to the news. In the frenzy that is today’s Washington, we try to cut through the noise and explain the significance of the biggest stories of the day, even those that aren’t the top headline. We don’t write down to readers; we meet our smart audience where they are.

We’re looking for a creative reporter to join our Congress team. We strive to cover Capitol Hill from a unique perspective. We believe that our readers need to know about big political fights, but in the context of the agenda they shape. We focus on the real policy stakes of these debates, going deep in our reporting of the policy details and what they mean.

We are looking for a reporter eager to ask different questions and experiment with form. For example, we like to ask members of Congress why they support a given bill, not just “will you vote for it?” We want key staff to tell us what policy options are on the table so we can explain them clearly.

This is an unusual opportunity to cover Capitol Hill. The ideal candidate has clips that show an interest in explaining the news. Ideally the candidate has covered the Hill and has some sources. Candidates with other relevant journalism experience will also be considered; just tell us why you’d be a great fit for this job.

Job requirements:

  • A demonstrated interest in explaining the news
  • At least two years of experience reporting and writing for a journalistic outlet or several serious internships where you reported and wrote stories
  • Experience covering Capitol Hill or working a beat where you spoke with officials, developed sources, and turned stories in a hectic news cycle
  • An analytical approach to major stories and a passion for digging into the details
  • Enthusiasm for thinking about the best ways to tell your stories, whether with charts, on a podcast, or collaborating with our video team

Vox values thinkers, creatives, and obsessives from all backgrounds. Our teams are looking to hire the right person — not the right resume. We encourage those with diverse and nontraditional experience to apply.

Please submit a resume, a cover letter, and three clips (links in your cover letter, or in the same document as your cover letter). This is a full-time position with benefits, based in Washington, DC.

Vox Media is committed to building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds, and everyone is encouraged to apply. Vox Media is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, disability, national origin, protected veteran status, age, or any other status protected by applicable national, federal, state, or local law.
