Connecting people with great local businesses

You found the perfect restaurant for your friend’s birthday party by searching on Yelp.
So when you needed someone to come fix your windshield, you weren't surprised that Yelp also helped you find a great auto repair pro.
How does Yelp distill data on millions of businesses into such useful search results? And how can Yelp get even better at showing exactly the right businesses for any situation? That’s where you come in!

On the Search Quality team at Yelp, we use machine learning to deliver personalized, context-aware business recommendations for billions of searches every year. Building on a Learning to Rank foundation, we develop new ways to delight our users, drawing on open-source and Yelp-internal ML projects as well as Yelp’s rich feature space. We also use Deep Learning and NLP to infuse our models with a comprehensive understanding of user intent.

We’re looking for someone to take these ranking models to the next level. If you’ve got expertise in the areas above, and if you have the tenacity to apply them to complex new problems in the search space, then we want you on the team!

The Search Quality team is driven by Yelp’s values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages “unboring” solutions to problems. You’ll deploy production code your first week, give input on technical roadmaps your first month, and continue to grow from there with the support of your manager, mentor, and team.

Where You Come In:

  • Build systems to deliver the most relevant search results to Yelp users
  • Work with the team to develop creative machine learning and information retrieval ideas to improve Yelp search, and carry those ideas all the way through to launch
  • Explore data to maximize and measure the impact of your changes
  • Design, develop and deploy machine learning algorithms and infrastructure that will scale effectively
  • Mentor engineers and help define Yelp’s technical roadmap

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • Based or willing to relocate within United Kingdom
  • Experience with search or in a similar problem space
  • A passion for search, creative ideas for how to recommend businesses to Yelp users, and a love of delighting people with local area knowledge
  • Industry or research experience with common methodologies within machine learning and information retrieval, such as learning to rank and language modeling
  • Production experience with an object-oriented programming language. We use Java & Python. You don’t need to be an expert, but experience is a plus and we will expect you to learn them on the job.

What You'll Get:

  • Full responsibility for projects from day one, an awesome team, and a dynamic work environment
  • Competitive salary with equity in the company, a pension scheme, and an optional employee stock purchase program
  • 25 days paid holiday initially, rising to 29 with service
  • Private health insurance, including dental and vision
  • Regular 3-day Hackathons and weekly learning groups, always with interesting topics
  • Opportunities to participate in events and conferences throughout Europe and the US
  • £50 per month toward any exercise of your choice
  • Quarterly offsites
