Zoox optical engineers should be highly self-driven and expected to work with small teams of multi-disciplined engineers. The optical engineer should be able to design and analyze optical systems using commercial software (Zemax, FRED, etc.), and should be able to communicate effectively with suppliers to convey optical tolerances and manufacturing concerns. After receiving components, the optical engineer should be able to assemble optical systems and design the relevant bench tests to verify optical performance. Ideally, the optical engineer should have experience integrating and testing optical systems with detectors, such as: CMOS, CCD, APD, and Microbolometer arrays.

  • Geometric optics
  • Lens design and tolerance
  • Stray-light analysis
  • Optical component testing (Lens curvature, Spectral transmission, etc.)
  • Optical system alignment and testing (EFL, MTF, etc.)


  • Opto-electrical system modeling
  • Fiber optics
  • Detector technology (CMOS, APD, Microbolometer, etc.)
  • STOP analysis
