Meet the Candidates

Besrat Zerehaimanot – Solutions & Full-Stack Engineer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub | Website

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • My most significant non-professional accomplishment was being accepted to UCLA on scholarly merit while also making it’s Division 1 Track & Field/Cross-Country program. As of 2020, UCLA was ranked the #1 public university for the fourth straight year and it currently leads the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) in Division 1 National Championships. Having had the opportunity to compete and study at a nationally acclaimed program was a tremendous honor, but it was also the most difficult endeavor I’ve ever had to endure. Managing to successfully navigate these responsibilities and graduate with a major in Environmental Science and minor in Entrepreneurship has given me an enormous amount of belief in myself and the audacity to dream big in my post collegiate life.

Strongest with:

  • HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python and Ruby

Also knows:

  • Django, Node.js, Vue.js, React, Ruby on Rails, P5.js and Bootstrap

Open to relocation?

  • Anywhere, but preferably the Greater New York City area or California.

About Besrat:

  • My most significant professional accomplishment was exceeding pipeline quotas in 6 out of 7 quarters I’ve spent with Oracle as a cloud solutions consultant. Having developed the ability to lead need-based conversations with c-level executives about cloud-based applications was a major professional break-through that made it all possible. Achieving these milestones at a corporation like Oracle gave me the reassurance that I can grow and succeed within the tech industry.
  • I’m freelancing mostly to keep my skills sharp, taking online courses on data structures/algorithms and programming languages to expand on my foundation in these fundamental areas.

Kristina Zakharova – Full-Stack Developer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • My most significant professional accomplishment outside of my coding career would be getting an opportunity to teach English in a low-income public school in Armenia, Colombia and to contribute directly to a local community by exposing local kids to other cultures and customs as a part of the learning process.

Strongest with:

  • Java, JavaScript, MySQL, HTML, CSS, Spring Boot, Spring Security, JDBC, Thymeleaf, jQuery, Bootstrap, Git/GitHub, MVC, Test-Driven Development

Also knows:

  • REST APIs, LESS, React, web design with Figma

Open to relocation?

  • NYC, remote

About Kristina:

  • I consider three things as my most significant non-professional accomplishments at this point: (I) being the first person in my family to get a college degree; (II) learning 4 foreign languages (English, Spanish, German and Portuguese) and being able to use them on a regular basis; (III) becoming really good at advanced yoga poses such as headstand, handstand and various other arm balancing asanas within the last year.
  • I developed a personal blog and content management system as the final project for Software Guild/LaGuardia Tech Hire program. The project allowed me to demonstrate all the skills I’ve gained: from building a database and setting up the backend data layer to designing HTML templates and making it possible for the end user to manipulate the information on the app. Dealing with authentication security was an extra bonus that I’m very grateful for.
  • I am extremely passionate about personal development. I am constantly learning new skills outside of my professional career that eventually help me to become a more well-rounded and interesting person that is easy and pleasant to deal with. My broad interests outside of coding include practicing yoga, singing, knitting, psychology and psychoanalysis, interpersonal communication, traveling, foreign languages and cultures.

Narish Singh – Full stack Java Web Developer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • I was a policy debater for many years in high school and college, consistently clearing to elimination rounds on the regional and national circuit at the junior varsity level and always placing top 3 as a varsity debater locally. My best placement was in collegiate debate where my partner and I were finalists of the Open Division at the Rutgers – Newark Tournament in 2014.

Strongest with:

  • My strongest language is in Java 11 with the Maven build tool. I am proficient with MySQL for database definition and manipulation up to 2nd normal form. I am great with HTML/CSS/JavaScript. I also have basic knowledge of Python 3 and C++ and can create backend console apps

  • I excel in both object-oriented programming and database-driven web app development in Java, sticking to a test-driven development workflow with Junit/Jupiter while adhering to the Model View Controller model. I have worked extensively with several standard Java libraries that are crucial for model and service layer functionality, such as the collection and lists interfaces, stream API, exception handling, etc. I am very proficient with the Spring framework for full stack development, such as Spring Boot and their core libraries, dependencies like Thymeleaf view engine for front end, working with their MySQL connectors through the JDBC template, their web security and validation libraries, etc. I am great with the jQuery and Bootstrap libraries for frontend development and work with API’s.

Open to relocation?

  • I am open to relocating for work nearly anywhere in the US, preferably on the East Coast or cities

About Narish:

  • I am a full stack java web app developer, certified through The Software Guild. My strength certainly lies in the backend, database, and testing, but I also have an eye for practical front end design and a smooth user experience
  • I have coached several award-winning middle school and high school teams in public forum debate, which would consistently break into elimination rounds of regional and national circuits. One team even won the novice division of the Westchester Classic at Lakeland in 2019.
  • I am currently self-learning Python 3 with hopes to become proficient in data science libraries like NumPy and Pandas, and technologies like Jupyter Notebooks, as well as full stack frameworks such as Django. Within Java I have experimented a bit with the JavaFX libraries. I also have deep appreciations for more lower level work like in C++, which I am also self-learning.

Donovan Richardson – Full-stack Web Developer

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • I spent seven months in Japan during college. I was so glad to be able to make friends and a lot of memories there. Strongest with:

  • I am strongest with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Java. I am also familiar with Ruby and Python.

Also knows:

  • I use jQuery and the Vue frontend frameworks. I am also familiar with Mongoose for Node.js. Knex is a query builder library that I enjoy using for SQL databases.

  • I’m ready to learn and do good work!

Chelsea Miller – Full-Stack Engineer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub | Website

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • My greatest professional accomplishment so far would be when I was working at my undergrad as a chief community engagement officer and I organized a large benefit to raise relief funds for the victims of the tsunami and earthquake of 2011 in Japan. I worked with local vendors and my school administration to create an event that raised thousands of dollars. This event was a lot of work, but I’ve worked harder on bigger things since then, however, few of those things have been for such a great cause, and that’s why this is my most significant professional accomplishment.

Strongest with:

  • I’m strongest with Java, and the SpringBoot frameworks. I’m also confident with SQL.

Also knows:

  • Javascript, CSS, HTML

Open to relocation?

  • Anywhere

About Chelsea:

  • I’m currently learning Python and React and looking to sharpen my skills by entering Hackathons.
  • My greatest non professional accomplishment thus far would have to be living independently. When I was eighteen, I moved across the country, from Los Angeles, Ca to Brooklyn, NY for college. It was hard being so far away from my friends and family, but I needed to prove to myself that I could live independently, and self sufficiently. After a very lonely and scary 6 months, I started to settle in. In the next few years I grew up greatly. I was forced to navigate adulthood on my own and forge a new life in an unknown terrain. Eleven years later and everyday I’m so grateful that I made that decision. Although I considered moving back to California several times in that first year, I found an inner bravery that allowed me to tough it out. I can say with confidence that I am a strong, independent, resourceful, and responsible person largely because of this move, and that is my greatest accomplishment.

Shazena Khan – Full-Stack Web Developer

I love how you can hand-make something that looks so professional and no one will know! The item is COMPLETELY customized to your specifications. I love the design process of sewing too. I can look at something, design it in my head, make plans on paper, measure, add to the plans, cut them out, and sew the pieces together and, if I plan it well, I end up with an amazing product customized to my wants and needs and no one can tell that it is not store bought.

  • My most significant accomplishment has been completing the Blog/CMS project. At the beginning of my bootcamp, I could not fathom how I would be able to progress from knowing almost nothing about coding to being able to create a complex blog site with user accounts and security the way I did. When I started, I was making small JS animations on Khan Academy with fish appearing on the screen at every click in random colors that was only 70 lines of code. My blog project was 14,000 lines.
  • Using Tasker, and Android App, to help automate tasks on my phone – which I will now work on converting into Apps written and developed by me.

About Rosmary:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • To further enhance my skill set I attend events and workshops. I am also currently working on a web app for my martial arts school with the purpose of increasing communication within its community as well as improving customer engagement.
  • My most significant professional accomplishment is leading the after-school program at my martial arts school. I tutored about 20 students from grades K – 12. I was responsible for hiring other tutors, keeping the students engaged, and making sure they were completing as well as understanding their homework. I used my years of retail and customer service experience to build lasting relationships with the students and parents. During the testing season, I would create extra workshops to prepare students for the state exams. This not only increased student performance, but it also increased revenue for the school. I was able to organize the students as well as set goals and expectations with both students and parents. This resulted in an increase in repeat students year after year. I created a fun and safe environment for the students while also teaching them how to be independent when it comes to studying and homework. I really wanted to work with children that are in my community who are mostly from Hispanic immigrant parents because a lot of them lack that support when it comes to school due to the language barrier their parents face.

  • I am thrilled to say, I have a couple of non- professional accomplishments. One of my accomplishments would be running a part-time and super niche online business called Zen Elites. Along with my online business, I have also found myself drawn to meditation and yoga to enhance my inner wellbeing and now I am happy to say that it is part of my lifestyle. I have learned to do headstands and arm stands, and will continue to challenge my body. Secondly, I am honored to say that I am the only girl in my family (2 brothers) and the first one to graduate from college. I come from a male dominated culture and usually women are put second in terms of career and education. But I am happy to challenge that norm and continue my career and education and hopefully set a good example for young Tibetan girls especially in Tech.

About Karma:

  • “One of my significant professional accomplishments was being able to sell a custom made “BLM” Shirt and I was able to make a good amount of profit in which I shared some of the percentages to the Bail Project in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
  • I just wanted to add that another accomplishment so far is to complete a 9 month immersive bootcamp from Software Guild. It was honestly the most challenging thing I have ever done. Besides the technical skills, I have learned to push myself in high paced situations. I have gone days without sleep to work on assignments and constantly battled with imposter syndrome but I never gave up. This program made me realize how adaptable and strong I can be as a person.

Mohammed Chowdhury – Full-Stack Java Developer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub | Website

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • My most significant non-professional accomplishment so far is that I am the first person from my family to graduate college. Going through college was very tough because I went into college without knowing how colleges worked, and how I would be applying for a major. I wasn’t too sure if I would be able to afford to go to college because there was no way I could burden my family with a 30,000 a year. I was blessed and I got a full ride with scholarships and financial aid to every college I applied to. I attended Queens College and graduated with a Computer Science degree with zero dollars in debt to my name.

Strongest with:

  • I am strongest with Java. During college 90% of my projects I have worked on were built using Java, and I just graduated from a Full-Stack Java bootcamp.

Also knows:

  • I am most familiar with Java Spring, Java Spring and Boot Bootstrap.

Open to relocation?

  • Anywhere in the U.S.

About Mohammed:

  • The Most significant professional accomplishment so far is finishing a eight months long Bootcamp during a pandemic. The Software Guild was very demanding, and the projects required a lot of time. Working 12-15 hours a day was very tough because I don’t really have a great learning environment in my house. Going through the lessons took a lot of time because I had to reread the lessons many times.
  • I was the vice president of Queens College IEEE Club. Vice president of Queens Knights Robotics Club, CUNY Hackathon 2018 and 2019 Top 5 winner.
  • In IEEE and Robotics Club, I have learned how to bring my code to life through the movements of the machinery.
  • I prefer to work with backends because I really enjoy writing efficient code. I fell in love with my algorithm class in College because it amazes me that human minds are able to come up with such complex and beautiful algorithms to solve all these complex problems.

Shawn Telesford – Full-stack Developer

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • My biggest non-professional accomplishment is helping others to realize their potential. I helped a friend of mine, who had trouble finding a job, to realize his potential and earn his position. I asked him to demonstrate to me how he’d respond to interview questions and inspired him while pretending to be his interviewer. As a result, he gained the confidence and energy to go through with the interview and succeeded. Another friend of mine who feared math learned to love math after spending countless hours on the phone with me discussing complex mathematical concepts. I simplified the complex mathematical concepts for her and she began seeing math as simple and fun.

  • The languages that I’m strongest with are Java, Python, Ruby, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Also knows:

  • Jquery, Django, Rails, Springboot server, Numpy, HDF5, Android Studio, Pycharm, Visual Studio, Neo4J, SQL, mongoDB, WordPress, Vue.js, Express.js, Heroku, Git, and GitHub.

Open to relocation?

  • NYC is the only place I’d prefer to live at for now but wouldn’t mind accepting a remote position outside of NYC.

About Shawn:

  • I’ve attended the American Meteorological Society 18th Annual Student Conference of 2019. At this conference, I presented the research topic entitled Ozone as a Health Hazard to scientists. I participated in a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program (REU) where I was exposed to MATLAB and python. During REU, I worked with Department of Defense in answering the research question, is ozone truly a heal hazard for those living on the New England Region of the United States?
  • I have management experience. I also attended the Emerging Researchers National Conference of 2019 where I attended talks about future technologies such as advanced artificial intelligence.
  • My most professional accomplishment so far is brining computer programming to an elementary school after school program that didn’t have any coding related activities. At the time I was there, the budget didn’t yet allow for an adequate amount of laptops so I decided to be creative and allow the kids to code using poster paper and markers. One half of the paper would be used for coding logic while the other would be used for the output under my supervision. The kids were very excited and happy to program for the first time.

  • I also was a volunteer at Planned Parenthood of Greater New York City for a year and it was one of my most rewarding experiences for me. I served as an emotional support for patients in the recovery room after they had procedures. It felt wonderful to be that support for patients during such a vulnerable time.
  • I also have a creative side. I really enjoy interior design, watercolor painting, and ceramics!”A background in healthcare, who strives to build products with empathy and geared toward societal impact.
  • My second biggest (professional) accomplishment was completing the bootcamp with General Assembly. I never thought I’d complete a program like this because of time, money, and self-doubt. Due to the pandemic and TechHire’s scholarship, the time and money aspects were no longer issues; it was the self-doubt. I overcame a lot of imposter syndrome during this process and showed myself that I can be an engineer!
  • My most significant personal accomplishment was helping my older sister plan her wedding in three months during a global pandemic. Just as I started my time with General Assembly, my sister decided she wanted to get married to her fiancé in 3 months. I thought she was crazy to have her wedding at a time like this with such short notice. However, she still wanted to go through with it and have me as the Maid of Honor. I felt especially overwhelmed because I was helping her plan everything while I was studying hard during the course. In the end, everyone was healthy and the wedding was absolutely beautiful!

Kwok Ren – Full-stack Developer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub | Website

Prior to TechHire – OpenCode:

  • One of the most significant professional accomplishments I’ve had so far was graduating from General Assembly’s Software Engineering Immersive Program. I’ve spent over 480 hours learning about different technologies such as JavaScript, Ruby, Python, Express, just to name a few. I felt like this was a very big accomplishment for me because this was such a drastic change to my career trajectory, and I found myself at a position where I could look for a career in a field that I am really passionate about.

Strongest with:

  • I am strongest with all basic frontend languages, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I am also proficient in Python.

Also knows:

  • I am very familiar with Vue, Express, Rails, Django, Bootstrap, Buefy (Bulma with Vue), Heroku and Github.

Open to relocation?

  • Anywhere in the United States

About Kwok:

  • I am a full stack software engineer who is well versed and proficient in many programming languages. Such languages include JavaScript, Python and Ruby. Alongside those languages, I’ve also learned about other technologies/frameworks such as Vue, Express, Rails and Django. I am also currently in the process of learning React as well.
  • I am currently learning the React library that is used to build many web applications nowadays. After learning about React, I plan to dive into Redux, which is state management for React. I plan on creating more projects like creating a new web portfolio for myself or an e-commerce web application to demonstrate my proficiency in React and Redux. I also plan to dive heavily into the concepts of dynamic programming and continue working on algorithms and problem solving.
  • One of the biggest non-professional accomplishments in my life so far is running an organization when I was in college. I was apart of a Chinese cultural organization (UCLA) and I took on the role as Vice President. I had the challenge of managing a group of fantastic people and together, we helped promote Chinese culture throughout campus by hosting many events. Another goal of the organization was to promote a family feeling, for students who wanted to be a part of student life (which was tough considering Baruch College is a commuters college). In order to do that, we host many social events to help the members of the organization have fun and enjoy each other’s company.

I am a full stack web developer with the ambition to create technology that can help shape society in an impactful way. My inspiration to delve into the world of technology and software development started with the creation of a website based on my hobby of gaming. By being able to teach myself how to create something from start to finish with no prior background, I was hooked and driven to learn more about software development so that I can bring my ideas to life.

After finishing my training in full stack web development with The Software Guild boot-camp, I have not only developed the technical skills to be able to create web applications using a wide range of technologies, but I have also gained valuable skills in team collaboration using agile and scrum methodologies, which are crucial in the modern tech industry. Furthermore, I believe my background in finance will greatly complement and accompany the skills that I have gained in web development and technology, which will serve to diversify my knowledge and skillset and allow me to be more versatile so I can venture into a broad range of opportunities.

The ideal workplace that I am targeting is an ecosystem where I can utilize and hone my skills as a professional developer while being able to make a difference through my contributions. Jose Sosa – Java Web Developer

Resume | LinkedIn | GitHub | Personal Website | My Tech Journey | Email

I am a Java Web Developer with a background in mathematics. The problem solving aspects of math go a long way whenever I find myself coding. Backend resonates with my inquisitive nature and desire to solve complex problems. My web development education was structured and began with a frontend approach: HTML, CSS and JavaScript led to many other areas of programming. From AJAX calls to exploring JSON and APIs. Next I transitioned into the world of Java, OOP and DDWA. Backend Java, frontend JSPs and JSTL were blended together and culminated in the use of MySQL databases.

Coding aside, I am an outgoing and charismatic individual with a passion for math, chess, and ultimate frisbee. I got into coding at the recommendation of a friend and I am eternally grateful. A better match may never be found. Developing offers me the opportunity to bring others’ visions to life and at the same time pursue my dreams and aspirations. Once we get past the poor math jokes you will find an individual with an affinity for coding and a knack for getting the job done.
